How to Add a Texture in Blender
Intro: How to Add a Texture in Blender
In this tutorial a will show you how to add a texture to an object using Blender. You can find the VIDEO TUTORIAL HERE
STEP 1: Shape
start by pressing shift A then select mesh cylinder
STEP 2: Size
Now press S and pick the size you want
STEP 3: Height
Press S Z then select the height you want
STEP 4: Smooth
Select the smooth tool to the left of your screen (if you do not see it press T)
STEP 5: Texture
Now you need to add the texture. First enter the texture screen, then create a new texture and select image or movie, and under image select open. Find the file you want to use as your texture and chose it. Now scroll down to Mapping and set your coordinates to 'Object', set your object to the cylinder we made, and finally set 'Projection' to 'Tube'.
STEP 6: Rendering
If you look at it with no render (seen in the top picture) the texture won't show up, but if you start the rendering process, you can see it there. Note: You do need decent lighting for a decent render

I felt this was a very poor tutorial. Only step 5 actually covers "adding a texture in blender", but it seems the directions are "go to the texture window"; and only by image. This still does not tell me where to go for the texture window, which is the whole reason I can't figure the rest out for myself. Perhaps you could focus more on step 5? You can assume if somebody wants to texture an object, they already have the object. Adding extras to the scene is unnecessary. Greater focus on step 5, and only step 5, would make this a better how to

Here is the problem and how to fix it. The Person who made this tutorial forgot to tell you where to get the texture from.
You need to make a new folder Name it <b>"Textures,</b>" Place that folder where ever you want. (desktop) Go find some textures (online) and dump them all into that folder you named Textures. I assume you don't have any. Now when you are in blender and you want to place a texture on any object. You point blender to your texture folder and chose what you want from ONE place.

As it seems other users had the same confusion from this instructable, here is a similar one that includes the unwrapping process, for better quality texturing

This tutorial is very poor, and only step 5 is useful.
