Introduction: How to Make Bio-diesel With UFO
Making your own bio-diesel from used frying oil (UFO) can be very rewarding.
Making your own bio diesel is the cheapest source of fuel after a year.
for every gallon of bio diesel you burn only 2 lbs of co2 gets released into the air rather than 20 lbs of co2 with gasoline.
Step 1: Items You Will Need:
Items you will need:
-Scale
-Litmus paper
-Glass blender
-Safety gear
-Lye
-200 ml of methanol
-1 liter of used cooking oil
-Paper towels
-Ladle
-Marker
-Masking tape
-One 20 ml beaker
-Two 500 ml beakers
-Three 1500 ml beakers
Petri dish
- 1 ml graduated eyedropper
-Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol)
-1 liter of distilled water
-Coffee filters
Step 2: Filter the Bio Diesel
1) If you are using used vegetable oil filter one liter of oil with coffee filters
this will take a while so i advise using a bunch of small cups.
The little colorful plastic ones that Ikea sell are perfect...
Step 3: Measure the Reactants
2) Measure out 1 gram of lye
3) Measure one liter of distilled water into a 1500 ml beaker
4) Pour the lye into the water
5) label the beaker lye + water DO NOT DRINK
6) Measure 10 ml of rubbing alcohol into the 20 ml beaker
7) Measure 1 ml of UFO into the rubbing alcohol
8) Label beaker oil alcohol
9) drop 1 ml of lye + water into the oil alcohol
10) Check the ph on the litmus paper
11) Repeat steps 8 and 9 until you have a ph of 8-9
12) Add the amount of times you dropped the lye/water into the oil/alcohol with 3.5 (y= x+3.5) This will be the amount of lye you use
Step 4: Blend
13) Measure 200 ml of methanol and the amount of lye you calculated into the blender
14) Blend for 30-60 seconds
16) Carefully open the blender and pour 1 liter of UFO in
17) Put the top back on the blender and blend for 15 minuets
Step 5: Seperation
18) Let the mixture either sit in the blender or pour into a 1500 ml beaker. Let the mixture sit for 8-20 hours, in a dark, cool and dry place; Such as a cooler.
Step 6: Separate and Clean Up
19) After at least 8 hours either pump or ladle out the top lighter layer this is bio-diesel, the bottom layer is glycerin
20) Clean up your mess, this is very important. Store the leftover lye, UFO and methanol in the cool dry place. Dry the glycerin and turn into soap, clean all gear. Do not use the blender or food again
Step 7: Use
You can now use this bio diesel in any diesel car, truck, tractor with no modification to the vehicle or engine.
if you want to make more than just a liter of bio diesel...
you can make a bio diesel processor for as little as 50$
than scale up the recipe

Can i use biodiesel in my diesel engine car, without any problem

I have found other uses for biodiseal. Rust prevention of nails for long periods of time. If you want modernately cheep nails that rust easily just soak in bio diseal for a week air tight and it is good to go. I expose my nails to strong acids to see if this works. It does work but requires more soaking before use.

I make small batches of biodiseal from different oils like olive oil, peanut oil, etc.
I use a separation funnel to separate the funnel. I use hotplate and magnetic stir bar for the preparation of the biodiseal. It is in a closed system preventing air exposure. Lye and methanol mix are required too. 100 ml of methanol and around 5 g of lye (Potassium hydroxide).
I will have to try this again with new equation.

hi I would like to know if any other substances can be used in the place of methanol ? ethanol perhaps?
Reply 9 years ago
Just I case you are a pyro like me, DO NOT light more than a ml or two of pure methanol on fire.
First off it is very expensive and secondly it is dangerous.
Just my advise.

Yes you can use ethanol however it has to be pure 200 proof ethanol (so either you make it yourself, or you buy it from a place that does not mix it with any other chemicals) and you have to use 30% ethanol vs 20% methanol.
If your ethanol is not pure enough I advise using methanol.

This seems a bit laborious, not so cheap and not enough dependable for use it in an expensive vehicle.
