Introduction: How to Make Elfan Lembas Bread

"Eat little at a time, and only at need. For these things are given to serve you when all else fails. The cakes will keep sweet for many many days, if they are unbroken and left in their leaf-wrappings, as we have brought them. One will keep a traveler on his feet for a day of long labour, even if he be one of the tall men of Minas Tirith."
From The Fellowship of the Ring, "Farewell to Lorien"

Made by the Elves, Lembas, or Waybread in the Common Speech, was a special food. While being very nutritious, it stayed fresh for months. After baking, it is wrapped in mallorn leaves to keep its freshness. One cake could sustain a man for a full day. Like other foods of the Elves, it was offensive to evil creatures such as Gollum, who refused to eat it.

• Lembas contain honey and light colored fruit and flower water
• They are cream-colored on the inside with a light brown outer crust
• They are thin and regular-shaped and
• They contain the "fruit of the Mallorn Tree" - a fictional tree from Middle Earth. The "fruit" is described as a nut with a silver shale.

To make Lembas you will need the following Ingredients:
2-1/4 cups white flour
2 Tablespoons protein powder
2 Tablespoons finely chopped roasted Almonds
1 Tablespoon Baking Powder
1/4 teaspoon Salt
8 Tablespoons cold Butter
1/3 cup Honey
2/3 cup whole Milk
1/2 cup finely chopped Apples
1 Egg - beaten

Set oven to 450 degrees
Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl
Cut the butter into chunks and form a fine meal with a pastry cutter
Mix the honey, milk and apples separately
Add milk mixture to flour mixture using a fork until a dough forms being careful not to overmix
Lightly flour dough and Flatten with a rolling pin to 1/2 inch
Cut with a 3” round cookie cutter
Place on greased baking sheet 1” apart and cut in a criss-cross ½ way through each cake to prevent rising
Use a pastry brush to coat the cakes with beaten egg
Place baking sheet in oven and bake until fork comes out clean and cake is golden brown
cool for 10 minutes before moving cakes to a cooling rack
Wrap cool cakes in non-poisonous leaf and tie each with hemp string

Perhaps if you are lucky Legolas will come to share your Lembas and dine in your garden. Watch out for the garden gnome however which he might mistake for a dwarf.
