How to Make a Bug Trap (mosquitos,wasps,hornets...)

Introduction: How to Make a Bug Trap (mosquitos,wasps,hornets...)

This instructable will show you how to make an effective trap for most of flying bugs for very cheap. It might not be most effective or the best way but you can easily make 10 of them in short time to cover a large portion of ground and get rid of those annoying pests

Step 1: Materials

To make a trap you will need:

a 2l bottle

beer (1-2dl)

sugar (1 tablespoon)

thread, fishing line etc. (optional)

Of course you can change the amount of ingredients depending on the size or your personal feeling.

Step 2: Preparing the Bottle

To prepare the bottle cut the top of and put it inside the other part(as seen in the picture) then put 2 little holes on opposite sides of the edge to fit some kind of a thread or a fishing line to be able to hang it from a tree, lamp, fence...(it doesn't have to be hanged but I usually put it that way)

Step 3: Filling the Bottle

Put some beer inside the bottle (don't put too much, it doesn't make it more powerful), and add about a tablespoon or 2 of sugar.

Step 4: Done

Picture shows the effect after some time :)

Thank You for viewing hope you enjoyed and good luck.

I guess the fly is smarter than me, i understand the construction, does the fly go thru the cap part into the beer sugar sugar solution?, what makes them not fly out of the cap hole. do they drown in the solution?

Thats a good idea! some improvments would be to leave the cap on (optionally attach a thin tube) so they are less likely to find daylight. Second would be to staple the parts together so they dont fly apart, and thirdly, punch holes in the cone so that the aroma can leak out (a little) better and attract more (perhaps use staple holes you are trying to get fruit flies).

    Dude, that's alcohol abuse! :-)

How long does it last? I would think it will work great for a couple hours, until the CO2 leaches out. CO2 is what attracts the little buggers to us in the first place.

HI.i dont really know how long it lasts but i have hanged 6 of those traps on a small area 3 months ago and they were full in month so i would guess its sweetness of sugar that attracts them not CO2 (although i saw that its effects weaken after CO2 no longer forces the scent of sugar out the bottle)
