Introduction: How to Make a Globe Fountain

Materials:

  • 12-in x 48-in concrete form tube
  • 2 - 5-quart bucket
  • 3/4-in x 5-ft PVC pipe
  • 80-pound concrete
  • Litex 8-in round white globe
  • 20-in x 26-in all purpose tub
  • 100–155-gallon-per-hour fountain pump
  • 1/2-in tubing
  • .5 cu ft river rock

Tools:

  • Knife
  • Cooking spray
  • Shovel
  • Hammer
  • Trowel or scoop
  • Concrete mixing tray
  • Hacksaw
  • Garbage bag
  • Duct tape

Step 1: Making Concrete Globe

First you will spray the globe with cooking spray. I placed the globe in a small bucket for support. After mixing the concrete you can now begin to fill the globe with concrete.

You will need to tape one end of the PVC pipe so that no concrete can go through it. Then place it in the globe. Tape down the PVC pipe with duct tape so it can stay in place. Now its time to let it dry.

Step 2: Making the Base

Place the bucket on the floor. I placed a old piece of wood on the floor so it wont stick. Then place the form tube over the bucket. Again tape one end of the PVC pipe so nothing will go through it. Place the PVC time directly in the middle of the bucket.

Step 3: Making the Base

Now begin filling up the form with the concrete. Make sure you keep the PVC centered. Fill until you reach the top and smooth the concrete even. Gently tap the outside of the form to reduce the number of air bubbles in the mix. Now set aside and wait until it dries.

Step 4: Setting It Up

After the base and sphere dry overnight, cut the sides of the form tube with a utility knife to remove it. Use a saw to cut the excessive PVC pipe.

Step 5: Making the Sphere

Place the globe inside a trash bag and tap the glass until it breaks. Break the glass until it falls away from the concrete, but don’t hammer the concrete. Then discard the plastic with the broken glass.Drive a stick through the PVC pipe and break through the duct tape and thin layer of concrete on the opposite end. Clean up the edges of the PVC with a knife.

Use the saw to cut the extra PVC pipe.

Step 6: Assemble the Fountain

Dig a 26-in x 20-in hole where you want your fountain. (I didn't do this step). Then insert the tub in the hole. Wash off the river rock to remove any loose dirt. Attach a length of vinyl hose to the pump and center the pump on the bottom of the tray. Add washed river rock to hold it in place. Guide the electrical cord to the outside edge of the tray and cover it with rock.

Step 7: Set Up the Pump

Thread the vinyl hose through the PVC pipe in the base and center the base on the tray full of rocks.

Step 8: Finishing Up

Test fit the sphere on the base by threading the hose through the sphere pipe. Trim the hose flush with the PVC pipe in the top of the sphere. Spread silicone around the tube on the base and underside of the sphere. Then rest the sphere on the base so the PVC pipes touch. Add silicone to the space between the hose and the PVC pipe at the top of the globe. Allow the silicone to dry thoroughly before running water through the hose.

Step 9: Final Step

Fill the tray to the top with water. Then connect the line from the pump to a power source and check the flow of water to the top of the sphere. Always unplug the fountain when you’re not around and refill the tray before each use.
