For this instructable use any piece of metal and wood that you have.  This could probably be used as a hatchet or a matchete. this is my third instructable.

Step 1: What You Need

 You will need
materials
-a piece of hardwood(i used maple) about two feet long and about 2 inches thick
-a piece of metal(1/4-1/8 thick) i used a shelf bracket
-2 nails
-wood glue

tools
-various rasps files and sandpaper
-a spoke shave or knife
- a saw
-a drill press with metal drilling bits
-a vice
-a hacksaw
-a hammer

Step 2: Round the Handle

put the wood in your vice and use the spoke shave, then the rasp, then the file and the sandpaper to make the wood round and smooth. you dont have to round about 4 inches of one end.  Make the other end have a roundish sticking out bit. Make sure it fits your hand.

Step 3: Atatch the Blade

with a saw cut a slot down the wood that is about as thick as the blade(the slot). If  it is not wide enough, then use sandpaper and a ruler to make it fit. Then put glue on the blade and slide it into its slot.  Clamp it and leave it overnight.

Step 4: Drill Holes

drill holes that are as big as thenails through the wood and metal.

Step 5: Put in Rivets (made of Nails)

cut the sharp end of the nails 1/8 of an inch past the thickness of the handle. Put the nails through the holes and hit the nails straight up and down until they flatten and hold themselves in.

Step 6: Sharpen and Your Done

sharpen the flat edge. sharpen about 40 degres on the edge, or the edge will snap.
