Introduction: How to Make a Portable Phone Charger
This is a tutorial on how to easily make a portable phone charger that fits in an Altoids container.
Please vote for this if you like the project!!
Step 1: Preparation
Materials:
- Altoids container or small container
- cell phone car charger
- gator clips/cables (2)
- 9V battery
- 9V battery snap connector
- electrical tape
Tools:
- scissors
- metal cutters/metal snips
Step 2: Wiring
Take your gator clips and connect one end of the gator clip to the positive wire of the snap connector. Connect the other end of the gator clip to the metal contact on the end of the car charger.
Take one end of the second gator clip and connect it to the negative wire of the snap connector. Connect the other end to one of the metal contacts on the side of the car charger.
Then wrap all the connections in electrical tape so the metal container doesn't interfere with the circuit.
Step 3: Cutting
Connect the 9V battery to the snap connector and put the wiring in the Altoids tin. On the outside of the Altoids tin, mark where the USB plugin is located. Then use metal cutters/metal snips to cut out the section you marked.
Step 4: Finishing the Project
Insert the wiring, 9V battery, and car charger into the Altoids container. To use, insert your phone's USB charger cable into the USB port though the hole in the Altoids container. Then plug it into your phone. Now you have a homemade portable phone charger that you can keep in your pocket or glovebox!

I think if you get rid of the really long wires and modify the cigarette lighter adapter thing, remove the alligator clips. It would work better because all that extra metal and wires creates more resistance on the battery causing it to not get the full power of that nine volt battery. Everything can be soldered together instead of using the alligator clips and the finished product will fit even better in the mint tin. You of course can still wrap it in the tape to avoid grounding the circuit out with that metal tin.

I plan on using this idea for my science fair project. Are you positive this isn't a scam and it really actually works?

This would never charge i tried and i wont here is why
9volt batterys generaly produce around 450ma (millamps)
Phones And ipods Need 1 amp of power 4 -5 AA batterys will work ipads on the other hand require 2A BTW if you are thinking should i buy a portable charger off of ebay or do this do this its way cheaper

I'm sorry it didn't work for u. I think u made it wrong because it worked for me and there is even a commercial product called wonder cube that uses a 9v battery to charge an iPhone. It might work if u used two because I use two on an updated version I made for myself and it charge more of the phone battery and it did it faster

Most smart phone batteries are 1500-3300mah.
A 9V battery has 50-400mah and at 500mw load has less than 300mah capacity.
You're also losing 30% of that 300mah thru the circuit.
Just exactly HOW much does this remaining 210mah charge your phone ???
