Intro: To Play Croquet

Croquet is a fun family game that is 2 to 6 players and is very fun and classy, like backyard golf. It does have some preparation and that is what this instructable is about.

STEP 1: Mow the Grass

This step is so important. If the grass is too tall, the balls will roll too slowly and if its too short, they will roll too fast. I find that 3/4 in to 1 1/4 in grass makes for the best playing conditions. Make sure you have a nice flat and open area to play in as well.

STEP 2: Locate a Croquet Set

This step is flexible, there are many croquet sets that work just fine, but many are cheap and the mallets are very short and difficult to use (me being 6' 2"). Make sure to read the fine print and get the right lengths. My set is old and slightly rusty but works very well. It even has its own cart.

STEP 3: Set Up Wickets and Stakes

This is the step where you drive the stakes in the ground and the wickets are put in place. The rough diagram shows the positions of the wickets. The distances can be altered depending on your particular playing field and the types of terrain you are dealing with.

STEP 4: Enjoy

You are now ready to play a properly set up game of croquet. I won't explain the rules as there are many versions and alterations, how I play may be different from how you play! Thanks for looking and always, have fun!

Never mind always playing on the flat terrain. Mix it up. set up the proper layout of the wickets but on anything but a flat clear surface. It gets more like golf if you can set up an undulating course with obstacles. Try it, you'll like it.

Thanks for the suggestion, i've tried to play on surfaces that are hilly, but the balls just always end up in the same place: at the bottom of the hill or in a ditch.

A flat surface allows for more precise shots, making the game more like pool

nice project but may I say that crochet is a game of pure skill so if you use flamingoes or regular mallets you must sit on them when it not your turn
I must properly correct my mistake of saying crochet instead of croquet what a silly thing for me to do
LOL wilgubeast thanks for the comment and I personally have challenged the red queen but I lost because I couldn't see around Alice she was giant.

But when do the beheadings come in? Is that why step 5 is blank? That red queen is a tough competitor when it comes to backyard croquet.
