Intro: How to Sew

This is an instructable that will show you how to sew. Follow all the steps and practice and you will get better. Anyone can sew. Note: This is my first instructables, hope you like it!

STEP 1: Getting Started.

First you have to know the parts of the sewing machine. Once you get familiar with the parts, this will make it easier for you to use the sewing machine. See the attached images for all the parts. I will explain the parts I feel necessary for a beginner.

STEP 2: First Is First.

Before you begin to sew with actual thread, you have to practice without thread. Put the paper under the presser foot and use the presser foot lever to bring the presser foot down. Press down on the foot pedal gently. It's like driving, the faster you press, the faster the needle will go up and down. To turn curved angles. To turn sharp angles ,stop at the corner, use the handle to lower the needle into the corner,lift the presser foot, turn the paper, lower the presser foot, and keep sewing. Print out the pictures on this step and practice sewing the outline to them or you can copy and paste them into Microsoft Word.

STEP 3: For Real!

Now you have to thread your machine. All machines have a different way but the general idea is the same. Stick the spool onto the spool pin, spin the hand wheel until the take up leaver is showing and then thread it threw that, then tread it threw the needle. For the bobbin, open the bobbin case and put the bobbin so it is a P. Close the case and spin the hand wheel towards you two times. then pull the spool string and the bobbin thread should be through the hole. Now you're ready!

STEP 4: Start!

Now just sew like you did in step 2 except with fabric. Also when you get to the beginning or the end, use the reverse button to strengthen, so you reverse then forward than reverse, etc. for about 4-5 times. You can use razor blade to to cut excess thread. When you are sewing 2 or more pieces of fabric together, use pins to hold them in place. Don't forget to remove each pin before sewing or else the needle or pin might snap and fly away. Finally, when you are done your whole project, iron it so it will be flat.

just a tip: use basting stitch in place of pins to temporarily hold the fabric/s together. just like what baddjj said, be safe and not hospitalized for having a needle stuck in your major artery!

When you are done your whole project, iron it so it will be flat" It's VERY important to remove the each pin just before it meets the presser foot- you don't want to run the risk of bending or breaking your needle should it strike one of the pins. I learned this the hard way after my needle broke and the tip that broke off ricocheted up into my eye! Happy Sewing

I learned that the hard way on a machine older than me :( Snapped the needle and hit me!
