Intro: How to Take a Fall (Skateboarding)

This is an instructable on how to take a fall while skateboarding. In this example, Bruno will be showing you how to fall while grinding a ledge.

STEP 1: Step 1

Bruno begins to crouch like normal to start his trick.

STEP 2: Step 2

He ollies onto the ledge.

STEP 3: Step 3

He begins to grind.

STEP 4: Step 5

Halfway through the ledge, he begins to loose his balance.

STEP 5: Step 5

At the very last part of his grind, his front foot slips off the griptape, and he begins to fall forward.

STEP 6: Step 6

This is the most crucial part of falling. Bruno puts his hands out first to absorb the impact.

STEP 7: Step 7

He then rolls forward to make the fall less painful.

STEP 8: Step 8

He lays in his failure and self pity.

STEP 9: Step 9

After the pain has left his body, he gets up.

STEP 10: Step 10

The key to falling, is to play it off as if nothing ever happened.

STEP 11: Step 11

He walks away calm, cool, and collective. Even though he is still crying inside form the pain he just endured.

instead of on wrists try landing feet first and instead of on head go on the back of your shoulder blade
Falling like this would never work. Hit feet first and roll off to the side, while bending your knees. I'm surprised you didn't break your wrists.
even i don't know anything of skateboarding, the way to fall like this, is very tough. You can fold your wrists and break them, therefore too, YOU'LL STOP THE IMPACT WITH YOUR HEAD WITH NO HELMET!! even with helmet, you can break your neck like your wrist. The best way to fall is like a cat, like nerd12 said. You land with your hands on the floor, over your head, the force pass to your arm and your shoulders, not the wrist itself, and then use your legs to make just the same. With some luck, you should do 3 or 4 steps, and you're up again. If not, you can use this parts like a spring and absorb the major part of the shock. Is just physics. action-reaction
Not sure if true...

Or just trying to sound smart...
nice. it was quite humorous but still stayed on topic!!
just saying I was in a martial art called judo and the first thing they teach you is when you fall don't land on your hands if you do it might brake your wrists
I think it's called Mari ukemi or something... I do judo to by the way.
...neither with your head (as picture shows).
Try with forearm/arm/shoulder (the left from the picture) towards your chest. The you'll roll properly ;o)
It is amazingly easy to break your arms that way(landing on your hands), my friend barely fell at all and landed on his arms. And guess what? He broke his arm
you seriously all don't realize this is a joke??
isint this kinda trivial thing to post on?
the best way to absorb the fall is like a cat.
bend your hands and knees and transfer the vertical movement to horizontal.
i always jump down the stairs by about 10ft at a time(diagonally) and this works for me.
Do not roll? That is the stupidest comment i have ever seen, if you do fall properly, you could break your neck or split your head open. Next time you write a comment, think about it before you post it.
if he rolled like that i am surprised he did not crack his skull like an omelet and break his neck.
1. that was a gymnastic roll, not a proper shoulder roll. so it hurts his neck.
2. at that angle he most certainly would break something.
3. rolling is fine is done properly. this is not properly.
i always use the tuck and roll technique when falling depending on how big of a drop or bail it is. Most of the time you are going fast enough that when you push off with your hands you just do a sort of front hand spring and most of the impact gets absorbed throught rotation and not just downward momentum.
i was always told never put your arms down like that, as it ois how you break your arms. Just take the fall and dont risk further injury.
True. I broke my wrist completely in half when I put my arms out when falling to drop in a half pipe (MINI).

The thing was 4 feet tall! What ever you do, never in your life stick your arms out.

Curl your arms around your head to prevent a concussion and lift the back of your head so it doesn't hit the ground. Head and arms protected.

Your ribs can take a serious beating and be fine. So you don't be afraid of breaking (or bruising) them.
well what if you crack your head and its bleeding heavily. you cant hide that, not to mention you'd need immediate help and a trip to the emergency room. play it safe, dont grind on a ramp like that until you know how to without falling.
