Imaginary Map

Introduction: Imaginary Map

In this project, you will be introduced to the artist, Alison Murray Whittington who is known for her watercolor fantasy maps. You will learn parts of a map and use your imagination to create your own fantasy map.

Check out Whittington's work here:

Step 1: Watercolour Wash

Use a very diluted watercolour wash over the whole paper. This will create the water. Let it dry completely.

Step 2: Pencil in the Details

Use a pencil to lightly draw in the details of the map. You can trace images by first making a with simple images. Place your map on top of the reference sheet and tape both to a window to make tracing easier.

Step 3: Fill in the Map With Watercolour

Use watercolour to fill in the details of the map. Don't get discouraged if it seems sloppy. You will add detail with a black pen once the whole painting has dried.

Step 4: Use Black Pen to Add Detail

Make sure the map is completely dry, and then use a black pen to add fine detail. You can also use pencil crayon to enhance the image.

This is excellent. I used something similar (but nowhere near as good for the mapping part) in homeschooling my kids; they were to draw a map of an imaginary country, and then work through all of the details of their new country, The could use the US CIA World Factbook ( - can also be downloaded,) for ideas on what to define for their new country. Then they were to write an entire history for their country. Use of other atlas books/programs were encouraged. This helped them to read the history and geography for their real country (the U.S.A. for us), and made it more real to them.
