Introduction: Infinite Supernova
Everyone Can Learn Origami !
I used to find origami difficult and boring until I was assigned a duty to take my school kids for an origami workshop. As I tried my hands folding papers with students, I found myself amazed at how a simple thing such as paper can be transformed into amazing things.
As I started following blogs and websites, trying origami myself, I find it comforting and meditative.
In this Instructable, I'm sharing one of the origami that I love.
I tried my best to keep it simple and included a lot to picture for easy understanding. Also, I'll be breaking down each fold into steps, so it going to be a long post. Please feel free to comment if you get stuck.
Let's start.
Supplies
We will need:
1) 8 different color origami papers(15x15 cms). 21 papers of each color.
2) Paper Glue
Step 1: Making Units: (1/6)
Start with a square sheet of paper. Fold it in half horizontally, crease it well sharpening it with a fingernail.
Now, fold the paper in half vertically, crease it well and then unfold it.
Step 2: Making Units: (2/6)
Fold each of the top corners into the centerline to make a triangle as shown in the picture.
Step 3: Making Units: (3/6)
Holding the top of the triangle, rotate it 90 degrees anticlockwise. Squash fold the flap down.
Step 4: Making Units: (4/6)
At this point, we will have 4 layers. For easier understanding, I have numbered it. Fold layer 1 and layer 2 to the top(front). Fold Layer 3 and Layer 4 backward
Step 5: Making Units: (5/6)
Again, holding the top of the triangle, rotate it 90 degrees anticlockwise. Squash fold the flap down.
Step 6: Making Units: (6/6)
Fold the two flaps up to make it appear as a Frog Legs. The unit is ready.
Make 21 units of each color. We have 8 different colors so we need to make 21*8 = 168 units.
"Too Many !! Believe me, after a while, it will be relaxing and meditative"
Step 7: Units Interlinking
Each unit has two Frog Legs. When folded inward with legs getting tucked inside note that there are 2 slits which are called Pockets.
Units are connected by inserting the Frog Legs parts of two adjacent units into the Pockets of a single unit.
Step 8: Assembly: (1/3)
Begin by arranging the units as shown in the picture above. The square arrangement will act as a base on which we will start stacking.
Notice that the base layer is square and the second layer is in a diamond shape(Or square turned 90 degrees).
Step 9: Assembly: (2/3)
For the third layer, pick up colors that you have used in the 1st layers. Connect them so that you have a square and a diamond-shaped(Or square turned 90 degrees) layers alternatively.
Step 10: Assembly: (3/3)
Lay the stack sideways and connect the topmost layer to the bottom layer.
Step 11: The Supernova Is Ready to Explode !
Hold it from the side with both your hands. Move your hand in a downward motion to unfold the inner layers. Adjust your hand as and when needed.
Watch the Supernova as it explodes infinitely.

When and how do you use the glue? I'm trying to connect the top and bottom most together to create the ring, but I can't manage to get the parts to connect without interior pieces popping out of the pockets.

HI,
This depends on numbers of layers. Try getting atleast 50 layers before connecting. thanks
Question 3 years ago on Step 3
Sorry, I don't understand how you did the flap down for step 3. I have been trying to figure it out. Thanks

Dear Modem, my apologies for not being clear. Let me try one more time.
1) In step 3, holding the tip of the triangle in the left hand, we need to rotate our wrist to 90 degrees angle(anti-clockwise). The first picture is from the front angle.
2) The second picture is a side view after the rotation. It looks like the picture below. Assume that I'm holding point B.
3) Now if we press sides BA and side BC simultaneously with thumb and fingers respectively. We can see a Pocket-like opening at side AC. Picture 3 is a front view of side AC.
4) We need to close the pocket by folding top to bottom(Side A to Side C).
I hope I cleared your doubts.
Please let me know if now. I'll add a video of that step.
Regards.
