Inkblot Collage

This instructable will show you how to use inkblot art, and form it into a unique collage. This project is great for all ages to explore their creativity and express their artistic abilities in a unique way. 

Step 1:

1. To begin this project, you will need four pieces of blank white paper, and your choices of acrylic paint. (If you would like to use different colors for each page, you will need twelve colors. However, you can always use the same color twice.)

Step 2:

2. Pick your first color and lightly squeeze some onto the page. This will be your main color, so add the most paint here. You should mostly have this paint in lines, as shown below. (Hint: don’t put paint too close to the edge of the paper to avoid overflowing)

Step 3:

3. Pick a second color and also squeeze onto the page. This color should act as an accent color, so only add a fraction of the paint you added the first time. Also, this paint should be more dotted , as opposed to the lines you used for the first color. This prevents the colors from overpowering each other.

Step 4:

4. Pick a third color and add to page. This color will serve as a buffer between the first and second color. It should be added in line-form, as the first, but it should also be less than the first color.

Step 5:

5. Fold the paper in half, and lightly spread the paint around with one finger. Through the page you will be able to see the pattern of paint. In areas where the paint is more heavily concentrated, you can manipulate it to spread where you want it.

Step 6:

6. Quickly unfold the paper before the paint dries. You should have a symmetrical, unique pattern.

Step 7:

7. Repeat these steps three more times so that you will have four inkblots. None of the four designs will be exactly the same –enhancing the uniqueness of the end product.

Step 8:

8. Allow the pieces to dry and then cut each paper into three, equal sections. You should have twelve pieces after this step.

Step 9:

9. Now cut each of those sections into three pieces. You should now have thirty-six pieces.

Step 10:

10. Take the middle piece of each set and separate it from the rest.

Step 11:

11. Out of the remaining pieces, choose sixteen, and discard the rest. You can choose any pieces you like, however you should try to choose pieces with plenty of paint on them. The result also turns out better if you pick an equal number of pieces from the original designs, so that the end result will have an even variety, and one piece won't be too heavily concentrated.

Step 12:

12. Take the four middle pieces you separated earlier and put them together in any order you like.

Step 13:

13. Now take the sixteen remaining pieces and position them around the center four, in any order you like. The end result should be a unique collage, as shown below.
