Introduction: Interactive Musical Wall Using Makey Makey

Interactive #MIDI wall installation.

Whenever you touch the notes on wall, it sends signal to computer and plays some musical notes on a web app.

Makey Makey is an invention kit that allows people to turn everyday objects into touchpads and connect them to a computer. Developed by Jay Silver and Eric Rosenbaum at MIT Media Lab, Makey Makey works by utilizing basic circuitry principles to transform conductive materials (such as fruits, coins, playdough, or other objects) into interactive inputs for a computer.

The device itself is a circuit board with alligator clips that connect to various objects. When these objects are touched, they complete a circuit and send a signal to the Makey Makey board, which then acts as a keyboard or mouse input to control computer programs, games, or even websites.

Supplies

  1. Makey Makey Board -1 Nos
  2. Single Strand Hookup Wire(Black) - 1 Roll
  3. Super Glue
  4. Alligator Wires
  5. Computer with Internet Connection
  6. Vinyl Sticker for background.
  7. Wire Striper.

Step 1: Choose the Design and Prepare the Surface

  • Choose the design of your choice it can be piano or anything its totally up to you.
  • I choose sequence of musical notes because it goes with the theme. I got the design printed on a clear vinyl(6ftx4ft) from a local print shop. It's totally up to you to choose size according to your space
  • Alternatively, you can use black paint if you have skills.
  • Finalize the surface/wall that you want to setup your project.
  • Make sure you clean the surface and make it dust free, so you can easily apply the vinyl sticker/paint.

Step 2: Prepare the Wiring and Electronics - 1

  • Strip the wire about 1.5cm from one end, Start sticking two parallel wires from the bottom of musical note.
  • Make sure exposed part of wires do not touch each other there should be some gap in between them.
  • Stick the Black hookup wires along the black lines of the design using Super Glue, so the wires wont be visible from distance
  • Leave extra wire hanging at the opposite end as shown in picture

Step 3: Connecting Wires to Makey Makey Board

  • Strip all the wires as shown in pictures
  • Connect one wire from pair of each parallel wires from different notes together to black alligator connector. this will act as a ground wire, which will be connected to ground/earth connector on makey makey board.
  • Connect all the remaining wires to different alligator wires then to makey makey board on Up/DOWN/RIGH/LEFT/SPACE connectors on makey makey board.(no particular order)

Step 4: Final Step

  • Now connect the makey makey board to computer using USB wire.
  • Open any internet browser on your computer and open this Makey Makey Piano App
  • When you touch musical notes on a wall, you touch two exposed parts of wire together, you are basically acting as a conductor and completing the circuit and sending the signal to computer through makey makey board.
