Introduction: James Devlin's for Make It Real #2 Challenge

About: Hey! I'm interested in programming, electronics, and repurposing random hardware to do cool stuff. Favorite things: Python, HTML/CSS, JavaScript Blender,…

Hey everyone! Here is my design for James Delvin's Make it Real challenge. I'm 15, and I've been glad for this opportunity to design something cool. Although I've used a bunch of other 3d modeling software, including Blender and Foundry's Modo, this is the first time I've ever used Tinkercad. It's been a learning experience, but I'm glad to say that it's been fun to develop my skills in another program.

I understand how much an exercise space can mean to a community, and I hoped to incorporate this into my design. I also wanted to keep this design practical and be cost-effective. However, as was stated in James' talk, it should be inclusive of disabled people and should not be damaging to the environment.

These topics are able to be interpreted in a variety of different ways, and I hope I've done justice to James' idea.

Step 1: The Indoor Pool

In my opinion, pools should be in every gym. They provide a place for recreation for all people. Pools are good for people who are recovering from injuries, allowing them to work out without damaging their bodies. Swim teams can use this pool for matches and training as well, another link to developing a community.

The chair can allow disabled people access to enter the water without any problems, and using a ramp instead of stars means that people can be helped in easier. For swim events, there are panels that slide in so the lanes can be open.

I also built the swim blocks in Blender.

Step 2: Bathrooms and Showers

Bathrooms and showers are required parts of any gym, although they might seem less important than like weight lifting rooms. In Covid times, they need to be safe to use as well as reliable. The showers, toilets, and sinks, are able to be easily cleaned, and the sinks have UV lights built-in which kill bacteria. In the stalls, there are handrails for accessible access.

Step 3: Locker Rooms

These lockers are equipped with self-sterilizing handles. These use UV light run through a handle to clear it from bacteria. People can use them to store items they use while working out.

Step 4: The Outdoor Park

Now is my favorite part of the design. I wanted to incorporate a place where people could relax after a workout and a place the community could be united.

Firstly, I added the water fountain. Water has been shown to help mental health and can help relax people after a workout. Then, the community garden. Gardening has been shown to lower blood pressure, and time spent outdoors can help prevent burnout. This was a big part of my idea. If you can harvest and eat the food that you've grown, it can also provide benefits.

As a side note, the trees are entirely custom- I made them in Blender.

Step 5: Basketball Court

Basketball is a great way to get exercise while having fun. This court is full size to provide maximum flexibility for people to improve their skills and to unite communities. This room has multiple entrances to allow entrance even in the midst of a game.

I included a closet to store all the sports equipment needed for the basketball court and gym. It can be accessed through the door on the bottom of the picture and has space for tables, equipment, and spare basketballs.

Step 6: Heavy Weight Room

This room is equipped with weights, punching bags, and pretty much everything thing else like that. It can be rearranged for easier access. For some, this is the place they spend the most of their time at a gym, so it needs to be inclusive of all people.

Step 7: Cardio Room!

Many people prefer cardio to working out, and sometimes it's not practical to run outside. I included this cardio room as a way for people to be able to exercise indoors. The color scheme is bright, with the reds increasing aggression, the yellows energizing, and the orange bringing enthusiasm to the room (according to color theory). The machines are all spaced at least 2 meters away from each other for Covid-safe operation. Running is a great way to improve muscles in the heart, leading to less effects of stress.

Step 8: The End

I included this quote which has been an inspiration to me throughout this project. I'm really glad Mr. Devlin made this, as I've learned a lot and thought about what actual architects and engineers go through to produce the designs for the buildings we live in.

I hope I provided some viable solutions for your project, and good luck!!!!
