Introduction: Jean Skirt
Here's how to make a pretty skirt out of an old pair of jeans. These skirts were quite popular in the 1970's and as they say, "Everything old is new again". You can make one in an hour or 2.
Step 1: Supplies
You will need an old pair of jeans and either some fabric, about 1-1/2 yards, or an old skirt from the thrift shop. I used a sarong with fringe. You will also need a sewing machine, thread, scissors and measuring tape.
Step 2: Cut Jeans
Cut the legs off the jeans right above the crotch, and below the zipper. I saved the denim and used it when I made my steering wheel cover. Also, denim scraps are good when making pot holders.
Step 3: Cut Fabric
Cut 2 lengths of 45" fabric-27" long each. Place right sides together and sew the side seams. I wanted to use the fringe that was on the short ends of the sarong, so I arranged it so that the fringe is on the bottom of the finished skirt.
Step 4: Pin Top to Bottom
Match the side seams on the fabric to the side seams on the jeans. Locate the front center and the back center, pin to the jean front center and back center. distribute extra fabric evenly and pin.
Step 5: Stitch Fabric Portion to Top of Skirt
Sew all around, with 1/2" seam allowance. Zig-Zag over raw edge so the fabric doesn't unravel. Machine hem bottom edge.
