Introduction: Jewelry Hanger
Required Materials:
Block of wood – 18”x3 ½”
3/16” cable – 3 feet
Nine 7/8th inch cup hooks
Two 3/16th inch ferrule (cable stopper)
Wipe on wood stain – Formby’s Red Mahogany wiping stain
Sand paper – 150 grit, 220 grit, 320 grit and 400 grit
Tools: hand towel, pliers, drill/drill bits (size based on materials)
Step 1: Choosing Your Wood
Any type of hardwood will do, we used a piece of 18 inch by 3 ½ inch teak.
Step 2: Predrilling the Hook Holes
Using a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the threads of the hook predrill 9 evenly spaced holes. Drill holes the depth of the hook threads.
Step 3: Drilling the Cable Holes
About three inches in from either end drill a hole for the cable to pass through (top to bottom). From the bottom side bore out the cable hole large enough for the ferrule (cable stopper) to fit into.
Step 4: Sanding and Staining Your Block of Wood
Sand your block of wood starting with the 150 grit sand paper and ending with the 400 grit sand paper. We suggest to sand with the grain, and wet the wood with the hand towel in between sandings allowing the wood to dry for 3 to 4 minutes. After the wood is smooth, apply the wipe on stain.
Step 5: Assembling the Jewelry Hanger
Thread the hooks into their predrilled holes. Thread the cable through the cable holes. Slide a ferrule onto one end of the cable and with your pliers crimp the ferrule so that it is tightly attached to the cable. Trim the excess cable off. Determine how long you want your cable to be. Slide the second ferrule onto the other end of the cable and crimp it tightly. Trim of the excess cable. Your jewelry hanger is now complete.
