Introduction: Karcher WV5 Window Vac Switch Won't Start, FIXED (Water / Corrosion on PCB)

Karcher WV5 (Removable Battery) Won't Switch On, Status Light Blinks Once Red, Not Indicating Charge Status

Supplies

  • Torx drivers for case screws.
  • Iso-Propyl Alcohol or PCB Cleaning Aerosol.
  • Silicone Grease.

Step 1: Rermove Outer Casing and Switch Module

Take out the Battery Pack, pull down and prise off the black base cover.

Remove the 5 case screws and separate the main case mouldings.

Pop out the black switch module PCB from its long yellow moulding.

Gently slide the black retaining clip away from the ribbon socket to release the ribbon cable.

Step 2: Split the Motor Housing

Remove the four screws holding the motor case together.

Carefully pull the two halves apart, taking care not to strain the ribbon cable entry point.

Unclip the ribbon from its socket and put it to one side, so it keeps its shape.

Step 3: Inspect the Main PCB for Corrosion and Residues

Inspect the various PCB sections for signs of water/corrosion deposits, pictures above show clear evidence of mineral salts around IC pins and other areas.

Step 4: Use IPA or Other PCB Cleaning Medium

Brush PCB etc with IsoPropyl Alcohol or a PCB cleaning spray - allow to dry thoroughly.

Check all is clean and dry.

Step 5: Apply Silicone Grease to Wet Side Joints

Apply silicone grease to the rubber joint lines, take care to coat the seals around the motor's fan end, where the two halves of the casing form the plenum chamber enclosing the fan.

Step 6: Insert the Motor and PCB Into the Lower Casing

Insert the motor and PCB into the lower half of the housing.

Re-fit the ribbon cable into its socket, and position it in its routing clips.

Carefully offer up the upper half of the casing, should slip onto the bottom half without any force needed.

Check that the ribbon cable is lying correctly in its restraints.

Ensure the two halves are snugly aligned.

Fit the four casing screws and tighten firmly.

Step 7: Temporarily Fit Battery and Check Operation

Temporarily fit the battery pack, if all is well, the on off button will now function as expected, and the status lights will be normal.

Step 8: Refit the Outer Casing

Re-assemble the outer casing, carefully routing the ribbon cable under its clips on black inner tube.

Fit all five screws to secure the casing.

Push on the Black Base moulding, it clips firmly over the casing, needs a bit of force to click together.

Refit the battery pack, the suction bar and the tank.
