Introduction: Keys + Other Accessories Rack
This project is for anyone who would like to create a key rack for not only their keys but for sunglasses, phones, wallets, pencils, etc.
Step 1: Step 1: Gather All of Your Supplies
For this project you will need the following:
- 1 circular saw
- 1 drill
- drill bit (choose whatever size you want)
- screws (However many you want and choose whatever size you want)
- wood (12X7, 12X1.5, 9.2 X 3 with a width of 3/4, and a skewer (all measured in inches))
- 2 woodworking clamps
- 1 measuring tape
- 1 pencil
- 1 straight edge
- sand paper
- 1 pair of safety goggles
-some rad tunes
Step 2: Pictures of Supplies
Step 3: Step 2: Plan Out Your Cuts
Read through all steps before starting (helps give you an idea of what you will be doing)
What I did was I grabbed different pieces of wood. Then measured one of the blocks of wood that I had at 12 inches. This would be the backside of the key holder. I then measured another skinnier piece of wood at 9.2 X 3 inches with a width of 3/4 an inch. This would be the bottom side to place a phone or a wallet. Measure another piece of wood at 7 X 12 inch and 1.5 inches in width. It was cut out from a larger piece of wood. Then draw 4.5 inches for a diagonal cut on the side pieces at one end of the blocks of wood.
Side pieces: from the mark of the 4.5 diagonal line draw a straight line to the edge of the wood. Look at next slide for clarity.
- Draw a line at where you want to make your cuts (Use a straight edge)
- 12 inches in length for the back piece 1.2 inches in width,
- 7 X 12 inch block of wood that is 1.5 inches in width,
- 4.5 inches for a diagonal cut on the side pieces,
- skewer 15.5 inches, and
- a block of wood for 9.2 X 3 inches with a width of 3/4 an inch

Step 5: Step 3: Actual Cutting
*safety goggles HIGHLY recommended* Set up the circular saw so that it can make a straight up and down even cut. Adjust the saw to be able to slide it back and forth for your cuts. Using the circular saw cut on the lines that you drew on the pieces of wood. Make sure that you go all the way through when making your cuts and have some sort of weight holding down the wood as well so it doesn’t go flying off during your cut. If the cut doesn’t come out smoothly or there is a little bit sticking out then use sandpaper or a belt sander to fix the errors.
For the drilling on the side pieces, make a crosshair to make your cut (ideally in the middle of the wood. Look at next slide for clarity). Clamp the 2 piece of side pieces one on top of another and evenly so that when you drill down the hole will be even for both pieces. Clamp them down to the edge of a table or workbench. BE SURE THAT THE PLACE WHERE YOU WANT TO DRILL IS NOT ON THE TABLE BUT ON THE EDGE (look at image for clarity). Drill straight down and on the crosshair for a clean cut. The width of your hole should be the same as the width of your skewer.
On another note, if you really wanted to you can add in hooks on the back and hang it on a wall. I just used it as a storage compartment in my garage.
Step 6: Picture of 2 Side Pieces Clamped Together and Showing the Crosshair
Step 7: Step 4: Assembly
Align the side pieces to the height edge of the back piece. When you’re satisfied with the alignment then clamp them both down to a table. Using a drill and a good length screw. Drill STRAIGHT down into the backside of the back piece so that it would go into the bottom end of the side piece do so for 3 nails on one side then repeat for the other side. Once complete then grab the skewer and place it in one hole, you may need to use a hammer or an edge of scrap wood to help push it through onto the second hole. Leave part of the skewer exposed to the outside of the structure. By doing this you can hang up any sort of lanyard. Next place in the block of wood for 9.2 X 3 inches with a width of 3/4 an inch. I added a little glue to the length of the wood that would meet with the pack piece and whacked it in between the 2 side pieces (it was a tight squeeze). And voila. You have yourself a shelf/ place to hold your keys. If you want to then you can place hooks on the back and hang it on a wall. I just used it as a storage compartment in my garage.
