Introduction: Kinetic Cardboard Fish

About: Artista brasileiro interessado em gambiarras no geral!

This project was specially designed to integrate the setting of the show "Fear Street." This is a skeleton of fish, two feet long, eighty centimeters tall and two feet wide. The structure of the object is made entirely of cardboard. Backbone of an animal is elastic and its vertebrae were made with polystyrene balls. The fish will be suspended by a nylon thread and a motor with an unbalanced weight on the shaft will be responsible for inducing the movement of swimming.

Step 1: Bill of Materials

For the fish:
  • 4 sheets of cardboard and 7mm thick, measuring 1.60 x2m
  • Hot glueGlue sticks
  • 1.5 m Rubber or spring20 Styrofoam balls, 10cm in diameter.
  • Cut Blazer
  • Pen
  • Video projector
  • Laptop
  • Vector illustration software
  • Small AC Motor

Para o peixe:
  • 4 folhas de papelão com 7mm de espessura, medindo 1,60x2m
  • Cola quenteBastões de cola
  • 1,5m de Elástico ou mola20 Bolas de isopor com 10cm de diâmetro.

  • Motor AC pequeno

Step 2: Modeling the Fish

The first thing I did was look for a clear model for making the fish. I needed an animal scary and imposing. I remembered the fish that Americans call BASS, known in Brazil by Robalo. I found this site http://www.helterskeletons.com/ with various models of fish skeletons. The skeleton of the Largemouth Bass was exactly what I wanted.

Became the bone structure of the skeleton into something easier to work with cardboard and the result was this:

Step 3: The 3D Trick

The tricky part was to model the bone structure. I tried using Google Sketchup, but could not reason using the program and the result is that I decided to do the drawing manually on graph paper and then went directly into the cutting board, riding the missing pieces to add volume to the fish.

I managed to do this on a small scale prototype using a cardboard box that was the recycling bin from my house. It cost me a day work. prototype allowed me to see where the structural reinforcements were needed.

Step 4: Doing It Big!

I sent the drawing to a friend who scanned. Then, using a laptop and a video projector, we project the drawing directly on the cardboard sheets. We try to optimize the most space because I already predicted that the backbone of the fish would be the critical element of the project. I would have to assemble a sandwich with layers of cardboard.

With the design projected on cardboard, scratched traces using pencil and ruler. Then cut out the pieces with the blaze and assemble the structure, using hot glue. First the head and then the rest of the spines.

The way the fish will be suspended by a nylon thread worried me, mainly because we are working with cardboard. I drafted this enhancement to run wires, using shirt buttons glued.

Step 5: Plaster, Sand, Paint

Next, we turn to plaster, to remove the imperfections. This step was necessary because we wanted to take a more careful finish the fish. Lots of sanding and cleaning and then have the fish entirely white.

Then I painted the fish, using an air compressor. My idea was to leave you with these colors, I discovered in my research on the skeleton of fish. This image was obtained with a contrast chemical inserted into the fish before performing a scan. The effect is very pretty. Darker than the contours in the center. The lighting in the theater will give the effect of this contrast.

A iluminação no teatro vai dar o efeito deste contraste.

Step 6: Mounting

After it was necessary to put the pieces together. A "cord" of the animal is made of elastic, to allow easy movement. The "vertebrae" are balls of Styrofoam. First we have to stick all the balls of Styrofoam and the vertebrae in position. I made a table with measurements of the prototype. It helps me find the exact spot where you should take the elastic, so that the profile drawing of the fish corresponds to the model. The rubber band should be taut.

Step 7: Moving It

The interesting structure is that any move made in one of the spinal reverberates the entire structure. To perform the swimming movement of fish, I want to put a motor in the head with an unbalanced weight on the shaft, the same system used on vibrate mobile phones. This should induce a lateral motion of the head that will reverberate throughout the animal's body.
