Introduction: Kinetic Sand
DIY Kinetic Sand
Step 1: Gather Materials
To make Kinetic Sand you will need:
1. Play Sand
2. Cornstarch
3. Food Coloring
4. Clear Hand Soap
5. Water
6. 2 Spoons
7. Large Bowl
8. Small Bowl
Step 2: Add Sand and Cornstarch to the Large Bowl
Add ½ cup of play sand and 2 teaspoons of cornstarch to the large bowl. **We used brown play sand, but for a more vibrant color, you may use white or pre-colored play sand.**
Step 3: Mix the Sand and Cornstarch
Mix the sand and cornstarch together using a spoon, until both are fully combined.
Step 4: Add Water and Soap to the Small Bowl
In a separate smaller bowl, add 1 1/2 teaspoon of water and ½ teaspoon of clear hand soap.
Step 5: Mix the Water and Dish Soap
Mix the water and dish soap together using a spoon, until both are fully combined.
Step 6: Add Food Coloring to the Water and Soap Mixture
Add 10 drops of food coloring to the water and soap mixture in the small bowl. **We used McCormick Neon Pink Food Coloring, but you may use any color of your choosing.**
Step 7: Mix the Food Coloring Into the Water/Soap Mixture
Mix the food coloring into the water/soap mixture, until all ingredients are fully combined.
Step 8: Pour Colored Mixture Into the Sand Mixture
Pour the contents from the small bowl (water, dish soap, and food coloring) into the large bowl (sand and cornstarch).
Step 9: Mix Well
Mix the contents together until everything is fully combined. **If Necessary: Add more food coloring for a brighter pink color.**
Step 10: Let Dry
Allow the sand in the bowl to dry for about 10 minutes.
Step 11: Play!
Now your sand is ready to be molded. Play with is as you wish. When ready to store, place the sand in an air-tight container in a temperate, dry location. When ready to use again, add a teaspoon of water, stir, and then mold as usual.
