Intro: Knit 'Shirt and Tie' Slippers

You know how gifts for guys are the worst.... Especially for the man who has everything, or the practical dad, or teenage boys....

This is your problem solved.... Shirt and Tie slippers.... Hipsters love them, dads love them, grandad a love them, guys with cold feet love them.

You will need:
100gm ball of Aran Knit yarn (10ply) in main colour
Scraps of Aran Knit yarn for the tie in a contrasting colour
Thin elastic
Size 5mm knitting needles
Size 5mm double pointed knitting needles
Darning needle to sew up

And a general shoe size for the guy you are knitting for. This pattern comes in several sizes, because well, I decided to write it that way. Size estimates are given here in men's NZ/AU shoe sizes, which run slightly larger than the same size for the U.S. But being stretchy slippers, I would opt for a smaller rather than a larger size. If making for a girl type person, I would make the small ones.... Or medium. Just google shoe size conversion charts.
Small: up to size 7
Medium: 7-9
Large: size 10-12
Extra Large: size 12 + (for those very large footed)

STEP 1: Knit the Main Slipper

Knitting the main part of the slipper is easy.... Just remember to make 2.

Instructions are given for all sizes. The convention for doing so is to have the first instruction for small, and the in brackets, the alternative sizes in ascending order.... So eg S (M, L, XL).

Cast on 46 (53, 56, 61)

Row 1: knit 6 (7, 8, 9), purl 1, knit 32 (35, 38, 41), purl 1, knit 6 (7, 8, 9)
Row 2: knit 17 (19, 21, 23), purl 1, knit 10 (11, 12, 13), purl 1, knit 17 (19, 21, 23)
Row 3: knit 6 (7, 8, 9), purl 1, yarn over needle, knit 2 together, knit 28, (31, 34, 37) knit 2 together, yarn over needle, purl 1, knit 6 (7, 8, 9)
Row 4: as row 2, just remember to knit all the yarn over needle bits as a stitch. This creates a row of holes to thread the elastic through later on.

Repeat these 4 rows until you have a row of holes that is 9 (10, 11, 12) long. This means that for the following sizes you will have completed the following number of rows on each one:
Small: 36 rows
Medium: 40 rows
Large: 44 rows
Extra Large: 48 rows

On the start of the next 2 rows, cast off 7, (8, 9, 10) stitches. Knit to the end of the row.
This will leave you with 32 (35, 38, 41) stitches remaining.

On each row:

Toe pattern

Row 1: (knit 1, purl 1) alternating to create a ribbed pattern over 10 (11, 12, 13) stitches, knit 12 (13, 14, 14), (knit 1, purl 1) alternating to create a ribbed pattern to the end of the row.
Row 2: (knit 1, purl 1) alternating to create a ribbed pattern over 10 (11, 12, 13) stitches, purl 1, knit 10 (11, 12, 13), purl 1, (knit 1, purl 1) alternating to create a ribbed pattern to the end of the row.

Create this ribbed pattern with a garter stitch sole over the next 14 (16, 18, 20) rows.

For all sizes, knit 2 together over the whole row. You will now have 16 (18, 19, 21) stitches remaining. For sizes medium and extra large, there are an uneven number of stitches before you begin this decreasing row, so the last stitch will be knitted separately.

Purl whole row.

Cut off the yarn with about 30cm of tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches and pull tight. Use this tail to stitch up the ribbed toe section.

STEP 2: Knit the Tie

There are 2 options here. One is a lot easier than the other. Option 2 is for intermediate to advanced knitters who like using double pointed needles. Option 1 is actually fine, and a lot faster. The tie comes in 2 sizes. Use the smaller size for small or medium slipper, and the larger size for large or extra large.

Cut 2 lengths of elastic long enough to thread through both sides of the holes of the slippers, and tie neatly. 30cm is generally more than enough for all sizes. I like to tie the elastic up when the slipper is on a foot, just to get a comfortable size. The elastic helps the slipper stay in place more easily than other slippers of a similar style.

Option 1.

Cast on 8 (10) stitches. Using a blunt darning needle, carefully thread the thin elastic through these cast on stitches.
Knit 4 (6) rows.
Knit 2 together over the whole row. At the end of the row, take the tail of yarn and wrap it around the 4 (5) stitches tightly.
Knit in the front and back of all 4 (5) stitches. This will give you 8 (10) stitches again.

Knit 8 (10) rows.
A- Knit 2 together, knit to last 2 stitches, knit 2 together.
B- Knit whole row.

Repeat rows A and B until only 2 stitches remain. Knit both together. Cut yarn, thread it through the remaining stitch and pull tight. Darn in the end of the tail.

Option 2.

Cast on 8 (10) stitches on one double pointed needle.
In the first row carefully knit into the front and back of each stitch, placing the front knitting stitch on one double pointed needle, and the back knitted stitch onto another one. You will now have 3 needles in use. Lay the thin elastic between these needles and hold it tight. Knit 1 rotation of both needles. Fold the knitting over so that the elastic is trapped between the 2 needles and the cast on seam. Holding both needles together, knit one stitch from each needle together, like you are doing a 3 needle bind off, but do not bind off the stitches. You will now have regular knitting with the elastic trapped within a knitted seam.

STEP 3: Stitch Up the Slippers

Take your darning needle and stitch from the end of the tow up through the ribbed section of the knitting, to the top of the 'shirt' to the collar.

On the back of each slipper, fold the collar up, and stitch down to about half way down the back. Carefully fold the back as shown in the images, to create the back heel. Stitch this up neatly.

Place the tie on the front of the slipper. Thread the ends of the elastic through the holes until you reach the end. Tie or sew the ends of the elastic neatly together.

You can also embellish with small buttons to create a button down shirt if you wish.
