Intro: Knit a Round Purple Dish Cloth

Over 10 years ago a friend brought me a pattern for a round, knitted dish cloth, and challenged me to figure it out.  I was already love to the idea of knitted dish clothes so I accepted the challenge.  It took me a while to figure out what the pattern was trying to get me to do.  When the first one was done, it was lovely and I started to make them exclusively.  This pattern is an easy pattern, that works from the center to the outer edge and a seam is sewn to close the circle. Since I already had purple 100% cotton worsted weight yarn, this one will be purple.    So onward to knitting a lovely purple dish cloth.

STEP 1:

Supplies:
30 gr. 100% cotton worsted weight yarn
Size 7 knitting needles
Scissors
Yarn needle (Not shown)

Abbreviations:
k – knit
co – cast on
bo – bind off
T – turn
k1f&b – knit one front and back (a form or increase, you end up with 2 stitches from the one stitch)
R – right needle
L– left needle
st – stitch

STEP 2:

Co 15 st, T, leave a 3 inch tail.

STEP 3:

Row 1 – k15 (from now on all odd numbered rows will be knitting all stitches to the end of the needle), T

STEP 4:

Row 2 – *k1, k1f&b, k12 (L1, R15,or in other words, your left needle will have 1 st on it and your right needle will have 15 st on it) T
Row 3 – k15, T

STEP 5:

Row4 – k1, k1f&b, k12 (L2, R15) T
Row 5 – k15, T

STEP 6:

Row 6 – k1, k1f&b, k12 (L3, R15) T
Row 7 – k15, T

STEP 7:

Row 8 – bo3, k1f&b, k9 (L4, R12) T
Row 9 – k12, T

STEP 8:

Row 10 – k1, k1f&b, k9 (L5, R12) T
Row 11 – k 12, T

STEP 9:

Row 12 – k1, k1f&b, k9 (L6, R12) T
Row 13 – k12, T

STEP 10:

Row 14 – bo3, k1f&b, k6 (L7, R 9)T
Row 15 – k9, T

STEP 11:

Row 16 – k1, k1f&b, k6 (L8, R 9) T
Row 17 – K9, T

STEP 12:

Row 18 – k1, k1f&b, k6 (L9, R 9) T
Row 19 – k9, T

STEP 13:

Row 20 – bo3, k14, T*
This is the end of the first section.

STEP 14:

Repeat from *-* 6 more times (a total of 7 sections).

STEP 15:

Last row – Instead of knitting back the last row, bind off all 15 stitches and leave a long tail.

STEP 16:

Thread the long tail into the yarn needle and whip stitch the open edges together, closing up the circle.  Weave the yarn tail in and out around the hole in the center and pull it tight to close the hole.  Tie, what is left of the long tail, to the little tail left from the casting on.  Weave the ends into the knitting to hide them.  Cut off any extra.

STEP 17:

These dish cloths wear well and make great gifts.  Some people have found them so lovely that they treated them like a doily.  Enjoy!

I don't under stand where you are in the pattern. At any one time you will have a total of 15, or 16 or 17 or 18 stitches on both needles. If you only have 14 either you started out with 14 instead of 15 stitches or your lost a stitch somewhere.
Pattern states start with 15,
add 3, cast off 3. =15
Add 2, cast off 3. =14
Add 2, cast off 3. =13

I dont see how this works... what did I miss
I really like this pattern, but I could not get it to work as written. If I simply repeat rows 1-20 six times, it works fine. Could the asterisk be in the wrong place? Thank you.

I am going to make this. Found the pattern last night, 4-14-16, and completed one section for practice. Will take that out and go again to the end. I love this pattern. I'm going to give my first completed piece to a friend who is going to another job. When I get this piece finished, I will post pictures before giving it away.

I use the size of this pattern for placing under Lamps on end tables, and the increased size that I make I use either as a center for a coffee table or dining table. I make 2 regular size and one larger size, they make great gifts!

i like the shape.but could you tell me me how i can do it bigger to shape a shawl? thank you.

I increased the original pattern to 30 stitches over all, just increase everything such as, binding off, etc. Um... increasing to make a shawl, you would probably be able to do that with 60 or75, or 90 stitches to begin, increasing accordingly. Hope this helped :)

What method of casting on do you use so that the tail and working yarn are on the same side?
Nevermind. All cast ons have the yarn on the same side. I think I just skipped a step. Embarrassing.

CorrinaT1 This is what it looks like cut down a little.

How can I make it smaller? Can teach me the no of stitch to cast n subsequent counts, please
The easiest way would be to use thinner yarn and smaller knitting needles same numbers. It would take more time than I have right now to figure out how to change the count. I won't be free until after June 18th, when I get back from my trip. If I happen to get it done earlier I will get it to you. Thanks for asking.
Thanks So So much.. greatly appreciate it.. I m looking at making it into a 6" circle.. using the same yarn tt i made one at 8".. my aunt loves it a lot.. and I m actually a first timer doing this...so happy to b able to knit something for her.. have a great trip..

I found someone on Etsy selling this pattern. I've bookmarked it if you want to find them.

At the end of the first section, it says repeat from *-*. I can't find the first asterix.

Try it now, in step 4. Thanks for commenting.
If you only do 4 sections, bind it off and sew it together, it make a very cute baby hate
