Introduction: LED Wand

About: I am a teen librarian at the Indiana Free Library. My teen group loves to make unique and fun crafts.

For this project you will need:

  • 3D Printed parts (.stl file attached)
  • LED light with resistor and wire
  • Copper Tape
  • 2 AAA batteries
  • Scissors

Step 1: Step 1

  1. Cut a one-inch strip of copper tape.
  2. Using the side of the wand that has the bridge, place the tape over the bridge making sure the tape covers both sides of the bridge, leaving .5 inches along the top half of the wand.

Step 2: Step 2

  1. Separate the wires by untwisting them
  2. Using the positive (solid color), fold the wire so that it fits into the top half of the wand with the exposed wire touching the copper tape above the bridge and the LED just halfway out the top of the wand
  3. Cut a piece of copper tape about .75 inches long
  4. Tape the exposed wire to the copper tape in the wand, sandwiching the wire between the two pieces of copper tape, press firmly to secure the bond

Step 3: Step 3

  1. Cut a piece of copper tape about 1 inch long
  2. place it at the end of the wand and wrap it around the edge so that .25 inch is on the outside of the wand
  3. Cut a piece of copper tape about .5 inches long
  4. Tape the negative wire(white) to the copper tape at the bottom of the wand, sandwiching the wire between the two pieces of copper tape, press firmly to secure the bond

Step 4: Step 4

  1. Make sure all of the wires are neatly folded into the top half of the wand

Step 5: Step 5

  1. Place the other side of the wand on top, making sure the LED is sticking out the top of the wand.
  2. Secure the wand with both rings

Step 6: Step 6

  1. Cut a piece of copper tape about 1 inch long
  2. Place the tape in the cap so that it covers the raised bump, goes up one side and over the edge
  3. Press this down firmly and make sure it is smooth

Step 7: Step 7

  1. Insert 2 AAA batteries, positive end first into the end of the wand
  2. Place the cap on the end of the wand
  3. Turn the cap to turn the LED on and off
