Introduction: Leather Journal From Scratch

Hello everyone. Just warning you this is my first Instructable so if you have any questions comment below. I learned how to make this style of leather notebook when my family took a 6 month trip to Morocco its simple but can take along time depending on the leather you are using I have used 8mm leather and that can take a while just to cut for this instructable I am going to use a very thin leather which id advise any beginners to use.

P.S

Have fun and please vote for this instructable in the leather contest!!!

Step 1: Step 1: Materials

Now for materials you'll need:

  • leather(whichever type you'd like)
  • hammer
  • chisel
  • exacto knife
  • ruler
  • string
  • needle
  • pencil
  • belt hole maker
  • scissors
  • paper( any amount 12 or over is recommended)

Step 2: Step 2: Rectangle

Cut your leather into a rectangle (remember the cover will be half the size of you rectangle). Mine is about 22cmx13.5cm

Step 3: Step3: Middle Lines

First you need to find the center on both of the longer sides of you leather piece. Then you need to draw a very light line down the center with a pencil after that take your chisel and hammer and stamp the all the way down the line you just drew so you have an indented line now(for thicker leather you'll need to soak the leather for 30 secs then do this step). Once you've done this make one more line on each side off the center line 1/2cm awayand chisel those too(make sure you use the pictures as a reference).

Step 4: Step 4(optional): Decorate

Now if you'd like you can decorate the cover as you can see I chiseled a honeycomb design.

Step 5: Step 5: Prepare the Paper

Now take your paper and split it up equally in three groups . Then fold those three groups of paper in half and cut them to make them fit properly in your notebook.(I used 4 pages in each set meaning i'll have 24 pages since each paper=2 pages though you can use as many as you want)

Step 6: Step 6: Making Some Holes

(Do this at top and bottom of page opposite of each other and look at next step for full picture reference if needed) so what you need to do is measure1/2cm down the 3 center lines and use the smallest puncher on your belt hole maker(I don't know the proper name)do this on all three lines then measure 1and 1/2 cm from the first holes and make 3 more holes. once you've done this rotate your leather 180 degrees and do this on the other side.

Step 7: Step 7:prepare the Paper Again

now take you paper sets and make a hole with the needle using the same measurements for the cover.

Step 8: Step 8:make It One! Weaving

Now set up your needle and string and go through the top hole on any of the side lines( not the middle line and tie the end of the string) then line up one set of paper with the line you've started , go through the top hole one the paper then go down through the next hole on the paper and out of the matching hole in the leather then down the line on the outside case and into the next hole on the line through the same hole on the paper set then through the next hole on the paper and leather. Now you should be at the bottom, go into the hole beside the one you came out of which is the middle line and repeat this step two times so that all paper is binded in. Remember each chiseled line is connected to one set of paper. when done go to next step to close it off.

Step 9: Step 9: Tying Off

first sorry for the bad pictures now you should be at the bottom and all the papers should be attached. First bring the needle under the loop of the last two rows then pull it and knot it of.

Step 10: Step 10: Enjoy!!!!!

now your done sit back relax and admire your diy leather notebook, I understand the last few steps were a bit messy so if you have any questions be sure to comment them and if you liked it please vote.
