Introduction: Leather Slippers

In this project you can create your own leather slippers, feel free to use different materials and colors.

The photos were taken by my lovely wife, she is also a instructables member

Step 1: Materials

You will need the following materials:

  • Masking tape
  • Pegs
  • Universal glue
  • Marker
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Lockstitch sewing awl (you can buy here Leather House)
  • Black thread
  • Sponge Carpet
  • Synthetic leather
  • Soles
  • Cardboard

Step 2: Make a Cardboard Mold

This mold will be used as measure for the rest of the project

Follow the order:

  • Image 2a - Put the sole on top of the cardboard and draw the outline
  • Image 2b - The entire outline of the sole
  • Image 2c - Draw a second outline about 2cm from the previous one
  • Image 2d - The entire second outline of the sole
  • Image 2e - Use the scissors to cut through the second outline line
  • Image 2f - Now you have a mold for the right foot
  • Image 2g - Flip the cardboard and you will have the mold for the left foot

Step 3: Make Sponge Carpet Soles

This will be the bottom of the slippers.

Follow the order:

  • Image 3a - Use the right foot cardboard mold and draw the outline on the sponge carpet (first right sole)
  • Image 3b - Use the right foot cardboard mold and draw the outline on the sponge carpet (second right sole)
  • Image 3c - Use the left foot cardboard mold and draw the outline on the sponge carpet (first left sole)
  • Image 3d - Use the left foot cardboard mold and draw the outline on the sponge carpet (second left sole)
  • Image 3e - Outline of four sponge carpet soles
  • Image 3f - With the scissors start to cut the sponge carpet soles
  • Image 3g - Cut the first one
  • Image 3h - Cut the third one
  • Image 3i - Cut the fourth one
  • Image 3j - All the four sponge carpet soles

Step 4: Make Leather Soles

This will be the layer to put the foot

Follow the order:

  • Image 4a - Use the right foot cardboard mold and draw the outline on the back of the leather
  • Image 4b - The entire outline
  • Image 4c - Use the left foot cardboard mold and draw the outline on the back of the leather
  • Image 4d - The two leather soles outline
  • Image 4e - Draw a second outline about 1cm from the previous one
  • Image 4f - Make the same to the second sole
  • Image 4g - The entire second outline in the leather soles
  • Image 4h - Use the scissors to cut the first sole through the second outline (black line)
  • Image 4i - Use the scissors to cut the second sole through the second outline (black line)
  • Image 4j - The two leather soles

Step 5: Glue the Soles

It's time to glue the various soles

Follow the order:

  • Image 5a - Apply glue in the right foot sponge carpet sole
  • Image 5b - Glue the second sponge carpet sole to the previous one
  • Image 5c - Apply glue in the blue sole
  • Image 5d - Glue the blue sole to the previous one
  • Image 5e - Aplly glue in the back of the leather sole
  • Image 5f - Apply glue on the top of the blue sole and on top of the sponge carpet sole
  • Image 5g - Glue the leather sole to the previous one
  • Image 5h - With your fingers crease the leather around the sole
  • Image 5i - Zoom in on leather crease
  • Image 5j - Use the pegs to aplly pressure in all sole
  • Image 5k - Wait about 5 minutes to let the glue dry
  • Image 5l - Remove the pegs
  • Image 5m - One sole is ready
  • Image 5n - Repeat these steps to glue the left foot soles

Step 6: Sewing the Soles - First Stitch

Using the lockstitch sewing awl - Sew with needle in the same position at all times

Follow the order:

  • Image 6a - The lockstitch sewing awl
  • Image 6b - Start sewing from top to bottom
  • Imace 6c - Grab the loose thread
  • Image 6d - Pull enough thread to sewing the entire sole plus a little bit more
  • Image 6e - Pull back the awl
  • Image 6f - Move the awl at proper distance for width of stitch desired
  • Image 6g - Insert the needle through the soles
  • Image 6h - Insert loose thread end through loop holding reel firmly so it will not turn
  • Image 6i - Pass the entire loose thread to the loop
  • Image 6j - Pull needle and thread with equal force in opposite directions to form the stitch

Step 7: Sweing the Soles - Second Stitch

Now it's easy

Follow the order:

  • Image 7a - Move the awl at proper distance for width of stitch desired

  • Image 7b - Insert the needle through the soles

  • Image 7c - Insert loose thread end through loop holding reel firmly so it will not turn

  • Image 7d - Pass the entire loose thread to the loop

  • Image 7e - Pull needle and thread with equal force in opposite directions to form the stitch

Repeat untill you reached the end of the sole

Step 8: Sewing the Soles - End Stitch

It's time to finish the sewing

Follow the order:

  • Image 8a - With the loose end tie a knot
  • Image 8b - With scissors cut the excess thread
  • Image 8c - The knot should be like this
  • Image 8d - Cut the thread that goes to awl in top of the soles

Step 9: One Done One More to Go

Well done!

  • Image 9a - Right foot done
  • Image 9b - Repeat the entire process to make the left foot

Step 10: Finishing Touch

  • Image 10a - Cut the excess leather
  • Image 10b - The two soles are ready for the next step

Step 11: Make the Cover of the Slippers - Make the Mold

  • Image 11a - Use your foot to make the mold
  • Image 11b - Use masking tape to around your foot
  • Image 11c - Reinforce with more masking tape if needed

Step 12: Make the Cover of the Slippers - Draw the Shape

Now you can be creative or choose a classic shape

  • Image 12a - Use the pencil to draw the desired shape
  • Image 12b - Draw the line were the sole ends
  • Image 12c - Draw the line were the sole ends

Step 13: Make the Cover of the Slippers - Cut and Identify the Mold

Follow the order:

  • Image 13a - Cut to the baseline line
  • Image 13b - Unstick the masking tape as one
  • Image 13c - This will me the mold
  • Image 13d - Cut the top of the mold by the line draw previous
  • Image 13e - Identify the mold (this case right foot)

Step 14: Make the Cover of the Slippers - Mark and Cut the Leather

Follow the order:
  • Image 14a - Put the masking tape tape mold on top of the leather
  • Image 14b - Draw the outline with a pencil
  • Image 14c - Cut through the outline
  • Image 14d - Unstick the mold and flip it over
  • Image 14e - Identify now the other side as the left
  • Image 14f - Put the left mold on top of the leather and draw the outline
  • Image 14g - Cut through the outline

Step 15: Stitch the Cover to the Soles - Fix the Two Parts

Follow the order:

  • Image 15a - Align the cover with the soles and use pegs to fix the position
  • Image 15b - Place pegs around the the cover

Step 16: Stitch the Cover to the Soles - Sewing the Two Parts

It's time to use the lockstitch sewing awl again.

Step 17: Stitch the Cover to the Soles - End Stitch

It's time to finish the sewing

Follow the order:

  • Image 17a - When you reach the start point it's time to end the stitch
  • Image 17b - With the loose end tie a knot
  • Image 17c -With scissors cut the excess thread
  • Image 17d - Cut the excess thread

Step 18: Enjoy

Now the slippers are ready!
