Intro: Live Edge Sofa Table With Industrial Pipe Legs

I've (Steph) been looking for a piece of wood to make a sofa table out of, so when we found this piece of cedar at a yard sale for $10, we had the perfect project for it!

STEP 1: Watch the Video


STEP 2: Measure and Cut Wood

This is the space I wanted the table. It's a narrow space thus we needed a narrow and long table to fit behind the sofa. That's the cedar over on the left. We let it acclimate in the space for a few weeks before working on this project. We measure and cut the cedar to size.

STEP 3: Sand Wood Smooth

We sanded the cedar starting at 80 grit and moving to 320 to create the smoothest finish possible.

STEP 4: Apply Finish

We debated between two different finishes--Danish oil and beeswax. The Danish oil covered the cedar smell so we used the beeswax. We wiped it on, allowed it to dry and then buffed with an electric buffer. Unfortunately, the buffer left swirl marks so I waxed again, wiped off the excess, let it dry, then buffed with 0000 fine steel wool. This proved to be the perfect technique.

We cleaned the pipe with mineral spirits then applied wax to the pipe to protect and prevent rust.

STEP 5: Attach Legs

STEP 6: Done!

This new sofa table fits perfectly in my house, which has a rustic/natural theme. I wasn't sure about the pipe legs at first, but we found they compliment the cedar perfectly!

Great project and beautiful piece of wood. One question though, what is attached to the back of the couch? I've never seen a couch with such a back.

BEAUTIFUL!!! Did you add protectors to the flanges to protect your floors? You can purchase pre cut or buy felt and make your own. :)

Thanks! We cut sticky felt to the size of the flanges to protect the floor.
