Introduction: MY FROG/TOAD HABITAT

About: In my shop I have a name for hammer, saw, and plier. The saw is Tess, the hammer's Joe, and Glumdalclitch is the plier. Yes, I'm brillig, and my slithy toves still gyre and gimble in the wabe. With that, le…

Wifey and I moved into our new house on Halloween of 2017. When spring arrived I saw all these tiny toads hopping around the yard. They needed a habitat. So I built one.

Step 1: HABITAT LOCALE

This area (as the previous owners left it) seemed ready made for a habitat.

Step 2: Decor

I rummaged through the garage and found toady stuff, and rummaged in the yard and around the house and found bricks.

Step 3: 'TIS SOME LONELY VISITOR, I MUTTERED.....

No sooner had I begun when a toad paid a visit to the area.

Step 4: THE TOAD POND

I found a cover in the garage to some forgotten serving dish. I wanted something I could change the water frequently knowing mosquitoes would also visit the habitat. I leveled the area and added water, then gathered the bricks.

Step 5: I ADDED BRICKS

I created cubbies for the toads to hide and feel secure in, and to my surprise, I hadn't even finished decorating the habitat when a toad jumped into the pond. He didn't move at all while I finished decorating the area. It was at this point I knew I was doing the right thing.

Step 6: FINISHING TOUCHES

At this point I stopped and let Mr. Toad enjoy the pond. I will, over time, add plants and what-not to the habitat. I might even build Toad Hall. And if you look carefully, you'll see Mr. toad is still in the pond.

I checked the pond again and there was another toad, unless it was the same toad showing his other profile. If more come I'll post their pictures.

I added Toad Hall.

There was a baby toad in the pond today. They seem to be enjoying it.

A large toad visited the pond.

Shaggy mane mushrooms (coprinus comatus) grew.

Let me know what you think. Comments are always welcome and questions are always answered.

Step 7: WINTER COMES TO THE FROG POND

All the toads are hibernating as a winter storm comes to North Carolina.

Step 8: PLEASE VISIT MY OTHER LITTLE SHOP INSTRUCTABLES

This was an easy build and so rewarding when it was inhabited even before I finished.
