Introduction: RoCkeT StOvE(one in the Ground & a Usual One)

About: i live in kerela(the god's own country)

my dad conventionally uses this stove["usual one type 1" and "usual one type 2"] as it is very energy efficient for cooking and I thought it would make a good instructable.

TYPE 1(IN STEP 1) IS FANTASTIC AS IT IS VERY EFFICIENT (once lit it will go on..upto 2.5 hrs..approx) AND IT IS VERY HOT UNLIKE OTHER STOVES.

Step 1: USUAL ONE(type 1-which Uses Sawdust As Prime Fuel)

STEP 1(MAKE THE CYLINDER)

  1. buy metal sheet.
  2. cut it in rectangle to make it as cylinder(ie if radius=r then 2*3.147*rwh=length u need to cut).i took my stoves height as 40 cm.
  3. cut a small square of side 7 cm touching one the length side of the rectanlge.
  4. weld to make it a cylinder

STEP 2(MAKE THE BASE)

  1. cut circle out of metal sheet.
  2. weld it in place such that the square hole should be at the bottom

USING IT

place 2 pvc pipes(one in the square hole at the bottom and another larger one vertically in the stove)

fill the sorroundingsof the pvc pipe by sawdust and enforce it by hitting at the top of sawdust to make it stong.

take out the pvc pipes.

place a burning stick in the bottom square hole and add a little kerosine...now the stove will work on ots own upto 2 hours

WORKING

The sawdust will burn slowly from the interior to the exterior till it is exhausted.

Step 2: USUAL ONE(type 2-which Uses the Wood As Fuel [not Sawdust] )

this one is the same as the STEP 1(usual one(TYPE 1) -which uses sawdust) except that uses sawdust as fuel and this uses doesnt use sawdust but uses wood as fuel.

  • THIS ROCKET STOVE HAS A SMALL OPENING AS OPPOSED TO THE -STEP 1(usual one(TYPE 1).
  • U SHOULD CUT OUT A RING AND WELD IT ON THE TOP TO MAKE THIS ONE FROM THE STEP 1(usual one(TYPE 1) ROCKET STOVE

Step 3: ROCKET STOVE(THE ONE IN THE GROUND)

Our attempt is to make a rocket stove as if imagined as the stove is in the ground.

Note:This stove that I have made is temporary and may not last long.this type of stove is used in different places with slight modifications and improvisations

STEP 1

dig vertical and slant holes such that vertical hole's diameter is slightly bigger.

You can dig these holes directly(make sure that the two holes rendezvous at the bottom) ---OR---

U can dig out lot of earth and then place the two pvc pipes at the appropriate angles and then cover it with earth(u should confirm strength of the thus made sand setup or it will collapse when we take out the pvc pipes).then take out the pvc pipes slowly without collapsing

STEP 2

place raisings(three brick) above the vertical hole as stand for the pot to sit on.

STEP 3

place the fuel magazines at the bottom(sticks) hole.

STEP 4

cook

AFTERTHOUGHTS

maybe u can dig out a bigger vertical hole and then fill sawdust like STEP 1(usual rocket stove) and use it(by using this method , we can can cross out the factor of the moistness of the earth)

Maybe u can make a skirt like setup around the pot to increase the heat transfer efficiency as the flue gases would make more turbulance around the pot and thus transfer more heat.

Step 4: ADVANTAGES OF a ROCKET STOVE

ADVANTAGES

  • .Direct flames to the pot
  • .Improve heat transfer into the cooking pot
  • .Hot gasses are passing close to the pot to maximize heat transfer;

rocket Stove versus a 3-Stone Fire>>>>>-->

INCREASED COMBUSTION EFFICIENCY WHICH IS OBTAINED BY--------à Fire is shielded against the wind; Door is reducing the amount and size of wood used; More space to burn off the volatiles; Less intake of cold air; IMPROVED HEAT TRANSFER--------à Pot sits higher above the flame; Most flue gasses have to pass the small gap between the potrest and the pot;

As the setup is advantageous by the above reasons it would be practically beneficial by the following ways-----\/

1 Saves money …The household rocket stove uses less firewood than a traditional 3-stone open fire. The amount of firewood used by a family in one day by the traditional 3-stone fire stove can last used for 2-3 days with a rocket stove.

2 Cooks faster… The rocket-stove fire produces more heat than a 3-stone fire stove and therefore cooks food more quickly

3 Less smoke Because of their design, the rocket stoves produce very little smoke. Only a little smoke is produced during the lighting process or if wet wood is used.

4 Easy to use… Once lit, the rocket stove will not go out unless the user stops adding firewood. There is no need to blow at the flames to keep the fire alight as with a 3 – stone fire.

5 Safe to Use …Rocket stoves are safer to use because the fire is shielded. There is less likelihood of accidents or burns to the user and children.

6 Affordable …Rocket stoves are constructed using locally available materials like anthill soil or sand for the body, and sawdust, ash or grass for the insulation.

7 Environmentally friendly …These stoves use less firewood and therefore contribute to the reduction in the deforestation rate. The rocket stoves are less pollutant because of their nearly smokeless operation.

Step 5: AFTERTHOUGHTS

This project can be altered by several ways like--

  • increasing the overall size, using different materials(such as bricks, mud, cement etc).
  • We can also make the usual rocket strove out of clay/mud which will last longer.

. Although it is hard to implement(I guess..i haven’t

done it..); u can use a pot skirt for more heating effect and efficiency as the hot gas would then be forced to flow around the bottom and sides of the cooking vessel.
