The Made In Shoe’s (MIS) project is an open source, scalable 3D printed shoe manufacture system designed for the low-tech, highly customizable and hyper-local manufacture of highly durable and repairable natural rubber shoes in the developing world.

The MIS system will enable a self-sufficient localized response to many issues in the areas of Sport, Health, Opportunity & Environment and is an example of what can be achieved when communities suffering from aid dependency gain access to the power of 3D printing enabled manufacturing.

We believe that with the knowledge sharing propagated by the open source movement and increased access to digital fabrication we can significantly reduce aid dependency. Help us prove this correct!

Step 13: Stipple on Sole (Optional)

Stippling latex on the sole of your shoes as an extra step to your build will increase the time it takes to wear the soles out.

Finished sole built up of 5 layers of orange latex, a different colour is recommended so it is easy to see when it is time to re-apply new coats of latex to make a new sole.

    I really like this, and I wanted to play with a pair. I was looking at your website but I can't see any files for different shoe sizes. ... or am I missing something?

    That's a neat use for 3d printing! How long do the shoes last with wear?

    Hi Swansong,

    I have tested a pair of previous iteration prototypes for 6 weeks including rock climbing without any significant signs of wear. The most recent design is more robust but still needs testing. Latex is used in many hard wearing applications such as car tires and shoe soles so I am reasonably confident they will hold up well. I am currently wearing mine and will feedback my findings in a few months.

    No idea, but I was looking at their website and they have more info on what they hinted at in the last step. That is, you can re-furbish your shoes when they wear out!
