Unleashing the Power of Magnet Fishing: A Comprehensive Guide

Magnet fishing has gained tremendous popularity in recent years as a unique and exciting outdoor activity. Combining the thrill of treasure hunting with the tranquility of nature, magnet fishing offers a fascinating way to explore bodies of water while potentially uncovering hidden treasures.

Supplies

To embark on your magnet fishing journey, you will need a few key components:

a. Neodymium Magnet: Invest in a high-quality neodymium magnet, also known as a rare-earth magnet. Neodymium magnets are incredibly strong and can attract metal objects with great efficiency. Look for one with a pull force rating of at least 200 pounds (90 kilograms) for optimal performance or you can salvage one from a speaker like I did.

b. Rope: Choose a sturdy and durable rope with a minimum length of 30 meters (100 feet). Opt for a thickness that can handle the weight and strain of potential catches while ensuring it remains buoyant in water.

c. Carabiner or Hook: Attach a carabiner or a sturdy metal hook to the end of the rope. This will enable easy attachment and detachment of the magnet while ensuring a secure connection.

d. Gloves and Protective Gear: Prioritize safety by wearing gloves to protect your hands during the fishing process. Depending on the environment, consider wearing rubber boots or waders for additional protection.

e. Duct tape.

f. And last but certainly not least, 1 2L soda bottle plus cap.

Tools:

a. Drill.

b. Soldering iron or lighter.

Step 1: The Inner Workings (pause for Dramatic Effect)

First take off the bottle cap and drill a hole through the top. Just big enough for your rope. Then you are going to cut off the bottom of the bottle, so you should be left with a cone shape at the top. Make sure it's nice and neat. Then tie the rope around the loop on the magnet, or you can do what I did, I took a washer and pushed it through the middle of the magnet so it can't slip out (my magnet came from a speaker, so it still has a lip). After that take a nut and tie a bowline around the nut and slip the rope through the washer, now it shouldn't come undone.

Step 2: Neatening It Up

So assuming you have followed my first step correctly. It should look like above. Now what you are going to do is this: take your rope and tie it to the string going around the nut. Then pass the rope through the bottle cap, screw it on. Put duct tape on the bottom, and.... Voila!! 1X MAGNET FISHER!!!

Step 3: Magnet Fishing

Now that you have built a super cool magnet fisher lets go test it out!! Go to a dam or canal or something like that, throw it in to the water and see what you pull up. Happy Magnet fishing!!!
