Intro: Magnetic Leather Wallet

A couple years, ago, I got a really awesome wallet that has a magnetic money clip and card pockets. I decided since there's a leather contest going on, now would be as good a time as any to try to make one.

STEP 1: What You Need.

You need some leather. (duh) This is what I had:

~A thicker, stiffer piece that's 2 5/8"x3 5/8"

~A more flexible piece that's 2 5/8"x7"

~Some 3/4" strips of really thin flexible stuff for binding the edges.

~Another piece, big enough to cover the magnet with some room to spare (not in the picture)

You also need:

~A plate of magnetic metal that's 2 5/8"x3 5/8"

~Some thin magnets. I had a 1" diameter ring magnet that I used.

~Some string

Also, you'll need some tools:

~Some wood blocks to sandwich leather between.

~Clamps to clamp leather

~Something to poke holes in the leather. A drill with a tiny drill bit works well, but poking holes with a nail works too.

~A needle

~Glue

STEP 2: Making the Magnet Thingy.

First, let's glue the sheet metal to the thick piece of leather the same size. Clamp it tightly between the wood blocks.

Next, lets take another wood block and make a hole a bit bigger than the magnet so we can bubble the leather out to fit the magnet. To do this, get the smallest piece of leather wet (so it'll bend better). Put the magnets on top of the leather on top of the hole, and press down on the magnet.

Wait for the leather to dry, then glue it to the long piece. After that, trim down the sides of the long piece to make it flush with the small piece. Then poke holes to sew it,. mostly for decoration

STEP 3: Putting It All Together.

All you have to do now is put it all together.

First, glue a strip on the top edge of the metal sheet and leather.

Then, place the long strip onto the leather side of the metal/leather, and glue more strips onto the sides. Clamp it between the wood blocks and wait for it to dry.

Last, (if you want), draw a small design on the small piece of leather (I used my initials).

Voila! You're done.

Good end product, but it needs more explanation, perhaps divide it into more steps and go into better detail.

doesn't the magnet wipe the info off you eftpos cards?

I hope not. I've been using a magnetic money clip for a couple years, and I've never had an issue, but I don't have a debit card, so I don't know if it'll affect that.

A little internet research seems to confirm that, but apparently, watch out for hotel key cards. A few people say that hotel key cards can get wiped.

Very cool wallet!

I quite like the way it looks. Well done :)
