Magnetic Phone Mount

My BMW iPod interface is not lightening compatible, plus I want to see music being play, who's calling from multiple phones .. Etc

Closest I found was a CD magnetic mount for over $25 !

Step 1: Pick Your Favorite Spot

I want someplace easy to reach, clear access to AUX input & charge cables, and no hole drilling !

Center console is it !

Step 2: Supplies Needed

This build only works if you have an existing thin phone case ....

- 2 large, 1" washers
- various angle brackets
- flat 1" steel plate
- flat & lock washers
- strong rare earth magnet
- spray paint
- bench grinder

Step 3: Build Your Mounting Plate

Take 2 big washers & tape to inside of your case. You can try hot glue to outside, but it'll be ugly ..

Step 4: Build Your Mount

Nothing fancy here ....

I know I wanted a mount with tilt & rotational abilities. Just pencil sketch & try out, use your imagination.

Remember to put lock washers on frequently move joints, tighten accordingly.

Step 5: Dry Fit & Adjust

Put everything on & go for a spin.
I realize quickly that my mount plate was too low

Step 6: Grind the Corners

This step depends on your pickiness or spousal temper. My wife threw a fit when she scratch against it !

Step 7: Paint & Finish

Depending on your interior color, spray several coats to match.

Enjoy your new car mount !

The washers are less than 1/16", so no ... Magnets do mess up the compass, but I use it for music plays only

Does this make your phone much thicker? And do magnets affect the function of the phone in anyway? Strong magnetic field can mess with electronics a lot.

I wouldn't recommend the use of magnetic mounts. A friend of mine used a commercially available magnetic mount and it pretty ruined the internal compass in the phone (which we were unable to fix, even by degaussing it). Additionally, the phone itself became magnetic which could potentially cause it to manage swipe cards etc. Only put magnets near your phone if you know for *certain*, you will never have cause to use the compass which is often used by mapping and navigation applications to orientate the map or by any app which has augmented reality type function. e.g. Star Walk and hundreds of others. Even the iPhone 6 which is largely alumiunium is suspepatble to being ruined by magnets.

I'd just like to point out that in Europe, it is illegal to use your phone when you're driving as it has been shown that it is more dangerous than drink driving. Don't do it, people. You might kill innocent people because you're not concentrating.

I haven't notice interference on phone nor GPS, both on iPod touch & HTC ..

i did the same with velcro. my only concern is, will the magnets interfere with the phone?
