Make a Lamp Out of K'nex and a Cell Phone!!!

     It's been a long day. Work was tough. Your coworkers were annoying you, you spilled coffee on your shirt, and you just couldn't seem to get much done today. Even the drive home was stressful, with traffic extending what should have been a ten-minute drive to an entire hour of boredom and frustration. All you want to do is go home, take a shower, have dinner, and read a nice, relaxing book in bed. 
     But of course, nothing goes as planned.
     When you get home, all of the hot water has been used, forcing you to take an unpleasant cold shower. and you accidentally burn dinner. Finally, as if to top off an already horrible day, when you finally pick up your book, all of a sudden, the power goes out!
     Life couldn't be more unfair!
     But wait! Before you go slam your head in the door-repeatedly, there is a solution to your problem! -Well at least one of them... You can easily steal some of your kid's K'nex (revenge for them using up all the hot water) and build a nice lamp to read with! Your day can be salvaged after all!!! So go get some K'nex from the kids' rooms (sneakily) and meet me back here! I'll have instructions for the lamp ready!

Step 1: Parts and Materials

O.k., do you have the K'nex? Good, well hopefully you got all the right pieces!

Here's what you'll need:

-8 white connectors
-28 yellow connectors
-30 red connectors
-8 green connectors
-8 orange connectors
-8 grey rods 
-12 green rods 
-4 red rods 
-10 yellow rods 
-2 orange rods 
-9 blue rods 
-34 white rods 
-46 green rods

Also:
-Three pieces of paper
-Scotch tape
-Scissors
-Mobile divice 

Step 2: The Stand

The first part of the lamp we will be building is the stand. This is the part of the lamp that will hold the cell phone light source and support the lampshade.

Step 3: Device Holder: Part One

Take two white connectors, and connect them using a white rod. Repeat to get three pieces. Next, connect the three pieces using green rods.

Step 4: Device Holder: Part Two

Take two red connectors, and connect them using a white rod. Repeat to get two pieces.

Step 5: Device Holder: Part Three

Connect the two pieces from step four to the white connectors using green rods.

Step 6: Device Holder: Part Four

Place white rods where shown on the device holder.

Step 7: Device Holder: Part Five

Take four green connectors and separate them into two pairs. Next, connect them to the device holder as shown.

Step 8: Stand: Part One

Take four yellow rods and separate them into two pairs. Next, connect them to the green connectors on the device holder.

Step 9: Stand: Part Two

Take two red connectors, and connect them using a white rod. Next, connect two orange bendy rods to them as shown.

Step 10: Stand: Part Three

Connect the piece from step nine to the bottom of the device holder.

Step 11: Stand: Part Four

Stack two white connectors, and attach them to the white rod on the piece from step nine.

Step 12: Stand: Part Five

Connect the yellow rods from step eight to the white connectors from step 11.

Step 13: Stand: Part Six

Attach a yellow rod to a yellow connector. Repeat to get two pieces. Next, stack the two pieces.

Step 14: Stand: Part Seven

Attach two white rods to the yellow connectors to hold them together. Next, add four blue caps to the end of each white rod.

Step 15: Stand: Part Eight

Attach the yellow rods from step 13 to the bottom of the white connectors from step 11.

Step 16: Stand: Part Nine

Take four grey rods and separate them into two pairs. Next, connect them tobthe white connectors from step 11.

Step 17: Base: Part One

Take two yellow connectors, and connect them using a green rod. Next, connect two red connectors using green rods.

Step 18: Base: Part Two

Take two green connectors and attach them to the red connectors using green rods. Next, add two more green rods to the end of each green connector. The Yellow connectors should now be slanted upward.

Step 19: Base: Part Three

Repeat steps 17 and 18 to get two pieces total.

Step 20: Base: Part Four

Attach two orange connectors to both ends of a grey rod. Next, attach a white rod to one orange connector, and a green rod to the other orange connector. Repeat to get two pieces.

Step 21: Base: Part Five

Attach the pieces from step 20 to both pieces from step 19 as shown. It is recommended that you place the rods facing opposite directions to balance put the look of the base.

Step 22: Base: Attach

Attach the base to the rest of the stand by connecting the grey rods on the stand to the yellow connectors on the base.

Step 23: Lampshade Holder: Part One

Take two yellow connectors, and connect them using a green rod. Repeat to get four pieces.

Step 24: Lampshade Holder: Part Two

Separate the pieces into two pairs and connect them using blue rods.

Step 25: Lampshade Holder: Part Three

Attach the two pieces to the device holder as shown.

Step 26: Stand: Complete

At this point, the lamp stand is complete. Check to make sure it looks like this.

Step 27: The Lampshade

Next, we will be making the lampshade, which makes the lamp less intense and more realistic.

Step 28: Lampshade: Part One

Take two red connectors, and connect them using a blue rod. Next, attach green bendy rods to each red connector. Repeat to get three pieces.

Step 29: Lampshade: Part Two

Slide the three pieces from the previous step onto two grey rods. Next, connect the grey rods to the yellow connectors on the stand from step 25, with the three pieces you just made in the center.

Step 30: Lampshade: Part Three

Take four red connectors and connect them to four green bendy rods. Next, slide them onto the grey rods from the previous step as shown.

Step 31: Lampshade: Part Four

Take five yellow connectors and connect them using green rods. Repeat to get two pieces.

Step 32: Lampshade: Part Five

Attach the pieces you just made to the bottom of the green bendy rods as shown on each side.

Step 33: Lampshade: Part Six

Attach two red connectors to a yellow connector using white rods. Repeat to get two pieces. Next, connect the pieces to the yellow connectors from the previous step using green rods.

Step 34: Lampshade: Part Seven

Take two red connectors and connect them using a blue rod.

Step 35: Lampshade: Part Eight

Connect a yellow connector and a red connector using a green rod. Next, add two white rods as shown.

Step 36: Lampshade: Part Nine

Connect the pieces from steps 34 and 35 together as shown. Repeat steps 34-36 to get two pieces total.

Step 37: Lampshade: Part Ten

Connect the pieces you made on the previous step to the top of the lampshade as shown.

Step 38: Lampshade: Part Eleven

Add green bendy rods to each end of the lampshade as shown.

Step 39: Lampshade: Part Twelve

Connect a red rod and a yellow rod using an orange connector. Repeat to get four pieces.

Step 40: Lampshade: Part Thirteen

Slide the pieces you made in the previous step through the top and bottom red connectors at each corner of the lampshade. Next, add blue caps to the top and bottom of each piece.

Step 41: Lampshade: Complete

The lampshade us now complete. Check to make sure it looks like this.

Step 42: Adding Paper

For papering the lamp, you will need:

-three pieces of paper
-tape
-scissors.

Step 43: Papering: Part One

Tape a piece of paper (in landscape format) to the top and bottom of the lampshade. Next, tape the sides around the back of the lampshade. Repeat on both sides.

Step 44: Papering: Part Two

Take the third piece of paper and set it in landscape format. Next, fold it in half "hamburger style," and cut it in half. Then, tape the top and bottom of each P2P piece to the sides of the lampshade. Finally, tape the sides of the paper around to the front of the lampshade. Repeat on both sides.

Step 45: Papering: Complete

The papering of the lampshade is now complete. Check to make sure it looks like this.

Step 46: Removing the Lampshade

To remove the lampshade, simply remove the grey rods (step 29) at the top from the yellow connectors (step 25). Next, slide the lampshade up off of the stand.

Step 47: Inserting the Device

To insert a device into the lamp stand, simply set the device to a screen or LED flashlight app, open one of the yellow connector pieces (step 25) and slide the device in, light source facing down. Next, close the yellow connector pieces again.

Step 48: Replacing the Lampshade

To replace the lampshade, reattach the grey rods (step 29) to the yellow connectors (step 25).

Step 49: Lamp: Complete

The lamp is now complete! Check to make sure it looks like this.

Step 50: Done!!!
