Ever wanted to have headphones that you can use wile working in a loud environment?
well its as easy as grab, tape, plug and play. This is the cost efective way to make noise canceling headphones.
Noise canceling headphones can cost hundreds of $$$. 

STEP 1: Things You Will Need

Ear muffs,
Ear buds,
and Tape.

Tape the earphones in like the picture below.

Just my opinion:

Common Sense = Self-Esteem (the sharing of useful information and/or skills) + logical thinking + predicting consequences with an emphasis on sustaining support of desired outcomes

Respect = the communication process of sharing useful information and/or skills with a peer group and the accumulating trust conveyed. No one ever gives a person Respect !!!! Social politeness is to offer a person the opportunity to Earn Respect.

Disdain = the communication process of sharing non-useful and/or destructive information and/or skills with a peer group and the associated distrust conveyed by the group toward that individual

Self-Respect (guiding others based on learned experiences) = comes from learned experiences, and is used to generate body language and voice inflections to guide others.

Body language and voice inflections communicate the level of experience in related accumulated knowledge from all mutually shared events of trust.

Self-Respect provides the body language and voice inflections to provide others with appropriate levels of confidence in what is being expressed.

Self-respect is built by trust conveyed by others, coupled with self-confidence. Self-Respect guides how to attribute trust to others to guide mutual participation in ALL groups.

A person that intentionally misleads others, especially in an attempt to earn recognition and respect, has not significantly developed self-respect.

Self-Esteem (indication of being useful specific to each group) = is attributed by others of a group as the accumulating collection of useful outcomes relative to teaching one’s self useful information and skills; the trust one has in-general that they are useful in providing support for the needs of the group they selectively choose to engage.

Self-Confidence = is attributed to one's self as the accumulating collection of useful outcomes relative to teaching one's self useful information and skills; the trust one has in completing a related proposed task

Self-Esteem guides personal pathways of usefulness in serving each group; tending to support accurate known value (passion) to group

A person that is Arrogant has difficulty in expressing Self-Respect, and instead tends to express loathing of others. Arrogant people are difficult to work with as they do not know how to generate mutual trust, so they tend to micro-manage efforts and exclude the useful advice of others.

Arrogant people tend to rise into positions of corrupt leadership.

Desire to belong to a group, tends to promote deception related to conveyed personal perceived value; this usually results in Disdain. Self-Respect prevents a person from mis-representing the importance of the information they have to share, and in the long term, coupled with persistence to teach themselves, accurately representing themselves "earns" them conveyed trust; i.e. Respect.

Please change the title to exclude "cancelling" eg. "make noise isolating headphones" or "make noise blocking headphones"

Its been over a year BUT Google just sent me here while looking for active noise cancelling projects.

It will also help people find your project more readily as it will be accurately named.

Regardless of how the industry is misslabeling and missrepresenting their products, "canceling " can NOT be accomplished passively, period. Look the term up for yourself. Here is a short but reasonably informative article : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise-cancelling_headphones

Sounds are waves. A wave can be cancelled by an exact matching wave that is the same amplitude and out of phase. "Passive" cancellation is not realistically possible. Here is a link to an article on ANC, active noise cancellation - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noise_cancellation

How are these noise-"canceling"? They seem more like noise-isolating. Noise-canceling headphones use a microphone to detect and then generate sound wavelengths to neutralize the ambient noise. Neat idea otherwise, but I would find this too uncomfortable to use.

Sadly, you are only describing "good" noise-cancelling headphones. The majority of low-to-middle-end noise-cancelling phones do not use active methods; many mix a low-decibel white or pink noise into the audio, or use a small auxiliary speaker embedded in the foam to broadcast white/pink/brown/mauve/what-have-you noises. I guess the general idea is that most people cannot hear low-volume white noise, but it can act as a passive filter. I'm one of those few poor souls for whom white noise at any level is maddeningly apparent...I've returned several pairs of these cheap alternatives that were hidden by classier brand names...

But I agree, these shouldn't be called noise-cancelling headphones. Cobalt420, I've made headsets like these before (I can't stand most ear-cup designs, so I embed old headphone speakers into rifle range mufflers that I like) - if the tape ever becomes uncomfortable, you might want to look for a headset that allows you to remove the foam; then you can embed the ear-buds or speakers at any depth in the foam, and trail the cord through cuts in the foam and plastic. It's a little more work, but I like to trail the cord through the sides of the plastic shells...I hate having the cord sit against my ears.

Perhaps change the title to include "Passive" Since these are passive noise cancelling. What they are referring to is "active" noise cancelling

just for working on a job like moeing the lawn that you would normaly wear ear muffs.

I keep seeing people saying "ear muffs" when referring to these things - a point of clarification, yes, this style is often called 'ear-muff' but your typical ear-muffs are worn to keep your ears warm, not to cancel sound.

These are hearing-protection ear muffs, or sound-canceling ear muffs, available at most sports/hunting places, typically around the guns/ammo.

Plain-old ear muffs will not work very well for this 'ible - people looking to do this one need to buy hearing-protection or sound-canceling ear-muffs.

DOH! I totally missed the headphones contest! I have done much the same thing, except that I found a pair that could be opened and drilled to increase the wearing comfort. See https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Homemade-Passive-Noise-Reducing-Headphones/ for a twist on the same idea.

Drummer in my band did this for tracking and recording and swears by it. Might be a bit bulky for the daily commute but it's a good trick if you need to hear only what's in the phones.
Probably more appropriately titled "Noise Isolating headphones" as mentioned before (and across many similar 'ibles) cancelling suggests active electronics are used to cancel out external background noise.
