Introduction: Maker Racer MK6

The Maker Racer is a toy produced by GoTime.US. It can be completely 3D printed and put together by hand with out glue. It can also be build using a variety of different gear configurations. Its plastic spring allows the car to 'race' for about a foot, after being pulled back.

You can buy this kit at the GoTime Store

Step 1: Buy or Print the Following Parts

Buy or print the following parts.

  • A : 2x Frames
  • B : 1x 40mm Gears
  • C : 3x 30mm Gears
  • D : 1x 20mm Gears
  • E : 3x Brace
  • F : 1x Springs
  • G : 4x Wheels
  • H : 4x Tires
  • I : 4x Spacers
  • J : 5x Axles
  • K : 10x Bearings
  • L : 10x Clips

Step 2: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • 5x Axles
  • 5x Clips

Step 3: Combine the Axles and Clips

Combine the axles and clips by pressing a "T" shaped end of each axle (each axle has 2) into one of the clips as shown. The top part to the "T" should be oriented perpendicular to the grove in the cap and fit snugly in the indentation. It will require a little effort to press the axle into the cap (it will snap into place if don't correctly.) If a cap does not seem to fit on an axle, or slips off too easily, try using a different cap on a different axle.

Step 4: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • 5x Bearings

Step 5: Slide the Bearings Onto the Axles

Slide the bearings onto the axles. Each axle should easily slide into the slot in a bearing.

Step 6: Find the Following Part

Find the following part

  • 1x Frame

Step 7: Place the Axles Into the Following Frame Holes

First, orient the frame so the:

  • The top (upper) side has 3 circular holes.
  • The right (front) side has 1 circular hole.
  • The bottom (lower) side has 4 circular holes.
  • The left (back) side has 2 circular holes.

Place the axles into the following frame holes:

Step 8: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • 1x 20mm Gear
  • 1x 40mm Gear
  • 2x Spacer

Step 9: Place the Parts on the Axles

Place the parts on the axles so that

  • The 20mm gear is no the lower back axle.
  • The 40mm gear is on the lower left middle axle (to the right of the 20mm gear.)
  • One Spacer is on the center upper axle (above the 40mm gear.)
  • One Spacer is on the front bottom axle.

Step 10: Find the Following Part

Find the following part:

  • 1x Spring

Step 11: Place the Spring on the Axle

Place the spring on the upper front axles. This position is above and to the right of the 40mm gear. Make sure that the spring is oriented correctly. The nub needs to be pointing towards the bottom side of the frame. Also, the spring coil needs to attach to the left side of the nub and coil away from it towards the left (running clock wise.)

Step 12: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • 3x 30mm Gears
  • 2x Spacers

Step 13: Place the Parts on the Axles

Place the parts on the axles so that:

  • One 30mm gear is set on same axle as the 40mm gear.
  • One 30mm gear is set on the upper middle axle, above a spacer.
  • One 30mm gear is set on the same axle as the spring.
  • One spacer is placed on the same axle as the 20mm gear.
  • One spacer is placed on the front bottom axle, above a spacer.

Step 14: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • 3x Braces.

Step 15: Place Braces in the Following Locations

Place braces in the following locations:

  • One brace on the upper back axle hole.
  • One brace on the frame, to the left of the spring nub.
  • One brace on the frame, to the right of the spring nub.

The braces are designed to hold the frame pieces apart (so the axles work correctly) and to secure the spring nub. When clipped to the frame, they should point straight up.

Step 16: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • 5x Bearings

Step 17: Place a Bearing on Each of the Axles

Place a bearing on each of the axles.

Step 18: Find the Following Part

Find the following part:

  • 1x frame

Step 19: Place the Frame

Place the frame on top of the assembly so that the axles and bearings fit through the frame holes. Also, the braces should clip onto this frame piece in the same way that they clipped to the first one.

Step 20: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • Clips x5

Step 21: Place the Clips on the Axles

Combine the axles and clips by pressing a "T" shaped end of each axle (each axle has 2) into one of the clips as shown. The top part to the "T" should be oriented perpendicular to the grove in the cap and fit snugly in the indentation. It will require a little effort to press the axle into the cap (it will snap into place if don't correctly.) If a cap does not seem to fit on an axle, or slips off too easily, try using a different cap on a different axle. The caps should secure the entire construction, while allowing the gears to spin freely. If you have trouble, look for tight gears of burs that could be causing issues.

Step 22: Find the Following Parts

Find the following parts:

  • 4x Wheels
  • 4x Tires

Step 23: Wrap the Tires Around the Wheels

Wrap the tires around the wheels.

Step 24: Place the Wheels

The wheels are designed to fit snuggly onto a clip. Each wheel has an oval indentation with a notch which matches that top profile of the clips. To attach the wheels to the clips:

  • Make sure that the notch in the wheel lines up with the indentation in the clip.
  • Press the wheel firmly onto the clip.

Although the parts are intended to fit snuggly, pressing too hard can damage the parts. Check the parts to make sure that they are free of burs or other bits that may interfere with connections. You can remove these with a file or pliers.

Step 25: Done

You are done. Enjoy your Maker Racer MK6!
