Introduction: Making Jalapeno and Cheddar Corn Bread in the Dollar Store Candle Oven

About: I think my interests tell a lot about me, I'm a multimedia artist which means I work in whatever medium grabs my attention, paint on canvas is very relaxing and acrylic paint can be mixed with paper to make a …

I saw an ad for a HERC oven a short time ago, it's touted as an emergency or survival oven that cooks with tealights. I thought it was really interesting but pretty big, you can supposedly cook a turkey in it ! I thought I could makew something similar but smaller and a LOT cheaper `

Step 1: Getting the Materials

I went to the Dollar Store and a3 pack of large aluminum take out bowls and a smaller set that fit inside. I picked up a grate and several bags of glass marbles from the floral section as well as an 18pack of teacandles and a package of bulldog clips

Step 2: Building the "oven"

I flattened the raised rim of 2 of the large plates and filled one with glass marbles then used a cooling tray I already had instead of the dollar store grate that would have needed some modification and placed the dish on another stand I had instead of using the other grate and bricks. I set the other plate on top as a lid and secured the 2 with the bulldiog clips then lit 12 tea candles and let the "oven" preheat

Step 3: Making the Cornbread

I used a jiffy box of corn muffin mix, some shredded sharp cheddar and chopped up pickled jalapenos and poured it in one of the smaller dishes that i had liberally sprayed with butter flavored kitchen spray and let it sit for 10 minutes then I placed it in the "oven" and closed it up

Step 4: Its CORNBREAD !

It took a little over an hour, maybe an hour and a quarter for a knife to come out clean. I probably should have rotated the bread but at least it didn't burn. The candles were pretty used up, they may have lasted another 10minutes if that. All in all I was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. I may have gotten better browning if I had a tile or something at the top or maybe used all 18 candles
