Introduction: Making Paper Beads
Are you looking for a fun and easy craft for home? Something you can do on a rainy day with very little prep work? This is a fun and simple activity that the whole family will enjoy AND you probably have all of the supplies you need already.
Step 1: Materials
Here is a list of the supplies you need:
- Paper plate (or another surface that you do not mind getting glue on.
- A variety of paper - patterned scrapbook paper, construction paper, or even an old newspaper will work
- Scissors
- Glue
- String
- A thin rod of some type for rolling the paper (a barbeque skewer, q-tip, or the inside of a pen - which is what I used in this demonstration)
- An assortment of small crafting beads - optional
In order to move smoothly between the steps, it is best to gather all materials at the beginning.
Step 2: Step 1 - Cut the Paper
Cut strips of the colored paper into triangles. You want the paper at an angle. Start with a base that is about 3/4 to 1 inch long and cut to a point as seen in the picture. Cut a variety of strips before you begin to create your beads.
Step 3: Step 2 - Add a Drop of Glue
Add a moderate drop of glue to the pointed end of the paper strip.
Step 4: Step 3 - Roll the Bead
Place your rolling tool at the base of the paper (if your paper is only colored on one side be sure the colored side is facing away from the tool). and carefully roll the paper around the tool until you have wrapped the glue point around the tool. If you wish to have a bead with more symmetry try and roll evenly, so the point ends up in the middle.
Step 5: Step 4 - Spread the Glue
As you reach the end of the paper strip the glue will squeeze out. Use your thumbs to spread the glue all over the bead. This will hold the bead together and give it some shine. It will also create a more sturdy bead.
Step 6: Step 5 - Remove the Bead
Slide the bead off of the rolling tube onto the paper plate to dry.
Step 7: Step 6 - Create Necklace
After you have created your beads and given them some time to dry you can create your necklace. Cut a piece of string to the size you need and string your beads. You can string only the beads you made or you can take some other crafting beads and place them between the paper beads as spacers. The possibilities are endless! Happy crafting!
