Introduction: Making a Baby Groot Model From Guardians of the Galaxy
In this awesome instructable I'll show you how I made the cute dancing baby Groot from the Marvel film Guardians of the Galaxy.
Things needed
- Small ceramic plant pot
- Good lump of air dried clay
- Two black beads
- 6 x 1 inch dowel
- Wire for frame
- Reference image
- Acrylic paint
- Super glue
- Little trees and bushes that modelers use
- Permanent marker pen, brown and/or black
Tools needed
- Clay sculpting tools
- Wire cutters
- Sponge
- Paint brush
Step 1: Building the Frame & Sculpting
Start by filling up your plant pot full of clay.
Next stick your dowel in and build up the clay around it (see image)
Make a cross using the wire.
Build up the arms.
Once you have your main body start sculpting, refer to reference image.
*TIP* Roll long strips and twist around body and arms.
Step 2: Painting & Decorating
Once you've left it to dry for about five days, touch up any cracks with fresh clay.
Again, once dry start your paint job. Use a selection of different brown colors.
*TIP* Dry brush technique will work well here.
Cut up the little model trees and superglue them on the end of the arms and head to represent fingers and hair.
Finish by drawing in lines using a permanent marker pen, just for a little extra detail.

Could you comment a little more on what you did with the colors here? I think your colors are a high point of the project.

I mixed dark brown with a little green, not mixing it fully and keeping it streaky, and when brushing on Groot it graduates the two colours.
I basically started with the dark colours working up to the lighter ones with a dry brush technique.
In the video you can see me adding light green to the tips of things like hair, arms and the twisty vine parts.
I finished using Sharpies to draw lines on to represent wood grain.
Hope this helps?

Scola air drying clay. Stone colour, nylon fibre reinforced. It has low shrinkage, can be coated with PVA glue and acrylic paint. Hope this helps.
