Introduction: Making a Transparent Barber's Gown Out of Old Umbrellas
Every day, large numbers of umbrellas are being thrown away, never to be used again. Through this, all the material that goes into making an umbrella is wasted. Hence, we thought that to reduce this wastage, we should come up with a way to upcycle these umbrellas. In this instructables, we will show you how to redesign an umbrella in to a barber's gown.
The special thing about this gown is that it is transparent, so while the customer is getting their haircut, it is possible to perform tasks such as reading under the gown. We believe that this could make the experience of getting your haircut less tedious and boring.
Step 1: Materials
for this instructables, you will need:
- 2 umbrellas
- Plastic tape
- Small magnets
Step 2: Attaching the Vinyl Parts of the Umbrellas Together.
Firstly, you will need to separate the vinyl part of the umbrellas from their frames. In most cases, the vinyl and the frame is only connected at one end of the frame. Separating the frame from the vinyl is quite easily done using some scissors.
Now, you will need to attach the 2 vinyl sheets you obtained to form the shape of a gown. We used hot glue to attach the bottom of 1 sheet to the top of the other. Now, if you want to(this is purely cosmetic) put tape on the edges of the sheets to make it look more appealing.
Step 3: The Fastening Mechanism
To make the fastening mechanism, attach the magnets to the top of the gown so that it can be fastened at the neck. To do this, use tape to attach the a magnet on the left and right side of the top of the gown, so that when the gown overlaps at the neck, the magnets can be used to fix the gown in place. Optionally, you can use this mechanism on the bottom of the gown to prevent the gown from flapping about when you wear it.
Step 4: Making the Rack and Hook
We are going to use the remaining parts of the umbrella to make a rack to hook the umbrella on. The frame can be mounted on the wall, and this will form the rack.
Furthermore, we need to attach the hook part of the umbrella to the bottom of the gown. This will act as a weight when we are using the gown, as well as acting as a hook to hang the gown from the rack.
Step 5: Finished!
Now you have a barber's gown, which enables you to simultaneously perform other tasks while getting your hair cut!
