Introduction: Map Coasters (aka Coast-To-Coasters)

About: I'm a 29 year old guy who's passionate about building and fixing things, sometimes if they aren't even broken. I get a great sense of enjoyment out of creating, designing and building new things. I also love t…

This is a fun little project that doesn't require a lot of materials or tools. The end result is a neat coaster that will give any room more character and a nice vintage look.

What you need:

-Old map or atlas
-Coaster(s)
-Glue
-Scissors or knife
-Pencil or pen
-Casting resin

Let's get started!

Step 1: Trace and Cut Your Map

The first thing you need to do is to get the coaster(s) you have chosen and lay it/them flat on your map. Then take your pen or pencil and trace an outline of the coaster(s) and cut it out with your scissors or knife. Then just place it on top of the coaster(s) just to be sure there is no overhang around the edges. If there is, just trim it off. Then, grab your glue and affix the map to the coaster.

Step 2: Mix and Apply Casting Resin

Now, just mix up your casting resin as per it's instructions and pour it over your map/coaster. I just continuously poured the resin in the centre of the coaster and let in spread until it was fairly close to the edges, and then carefully used a popsicle stick to line the resin around the edges. Make sure you don't put too much resin on or it will run over the edges and ruin the 'raised edge' look. I didn't take any photos of the actual mixing and application of the resin, but as long as you follow the instructions that come with it, it's really not difficult at all. After you're satisfied with your resin application, cover the coaster with a small box or tupperware or something just to keep dust particles and hair from getting trapped in the resin before it cures. Let it sit for about 24 hours before handling it.

Step 3: Set It on Your Table

Done! Now all you have to do is place your coasters on a coffee table or wherever you like. Hope you enjoyed this quick little instructable!
