Introduction: Measuring Tape Holder

About: Part MacGyver, part Martha, creator, host and producer of Engineer Your Space, an award winning DIY home design show dedicated to clever, affordable and stylish solutions for common challenges faced by renters…

I always seem to misplace my measuring tape so I decided to give it its very own dedicated storage spot on my door organizer. It took only minutes to make using a piece of metal from an aluminum flashing sheet and I love it! I wish I would have done this sooner!

Step 1: Cut a Strip of Aluminum Flashing

I used heavy duty scissors to cut a strip about 1 1/2" inches wide from a 5" x 7" aluminum flashing sheet. The edges can be very sharp, so handle carefully, or better yet, wear gloves to do this.

Step 2: Bend the Strip in a U-shape

Using a straight edge, bend the metal strip into a u-shape - it should be deep enough to wrap around the sides of the piece of wood you will attach it to and leave about 1/2 inch of space for the measuring tape clip to easily glide in place.

Step 3: Attach the Holder to a Piece of Wood

I used multi-material screws from SPAX to attach the holder to my door organizer. These screws work with metal and wood and don't require any pre-drilling but making a small divot with a nail prior to drilling helps prevent the screw from slipping.

Step 4: Slip Your Measuring Tape Onto the Holder

I love my door organizer and having a dedicated spot for my measuring tape! You can see how I made my simple door organizer and transformed a small coat closet into a mini-workshop/tool storage closet in this video here: http://youtu.be/TSWRCGrLn3E

    Impressively organized door!

+1 on the metal strip. I keep several tapes on a ruler length piece because I set them down everywhere. At least this way I know where the next one is.

Nice tool hanger. I was looking for one of these and didn't know what I wanted until I saw yours. Very simple.
About that door tool rack, that's a great idea in itself!

Great idea! I did this a few months ago but with 5/16 steel and i spaced it out from the wood a bit to fit my caliper behind it. Super handy to not have to dig through a tool drawer for the tape measure.

Thanks! I agree, so much better than having to dig through a drawer :)
