Intro: Memorial Flag Shadow Box With Chisel Storage

With Veterans day right around the corner i thought this would be a great project. My Grandfather passed away some time ago and since I was in the Military my grandma gave me his flag. Like everyone else my skills have gotten better and it was time to redo the case I had for the flag. I was also given his Chisels and I wanted to incorporate that into the design. so here it is

STEP 1: Mill Wood

Mill up all the wood to length

dimensions was 25 by 32

the memorial flag needs a 25 by 16 3/4 by 3 inches

for the section holding the chisels cut a 1/2 inch dado down the center of the wood

then cut 2 dados for the center divider

STEP 2: Sanding

this may sound like to early to sand but you will thank me later sanding before you put it together is so much easier. I made 2 frames for 2 pictures of my grandpa in uniform and added splines to them as well this makes for a very strong joint.

STEP 3: Assemble

using glue assemble the box and clamp verify everything is squared up. and let sit overnight

set up the spline jig (look it up easy to make) i added 2 spline to each corner using padauk for the splines to add some color contrast

STEP 4: Plywood Backing

i used the 1/4 inch rabbit bit in my router to add a rabbit to the back of the box then cut the plywood to size i used maple for the chisel compartment and then Flocked the area that contained the picture and left the flag area blank.

STEP 5: Face Frame

for the face frame i cut the wood using 45s then added a 1/4 inch rabbit to accept the glass.

STEP 6: Chisel Storage

Drill holes for the chisel in a separate piece of wood

using a contrasting color i laid out all the chisels and drilled holes according to the size of the chisel.

STEP 7: Finishing

I used a wipe on water lox to finish the project and added a French cleat to the back for easy mounting

then drilled a hole the size of the led lights in the top right hand corner of the dado slot and added lights cut them down to length
