Introduction: Microfiche Star
Create these neat decorative stars using Microfiche (and LEDs if you are feeling snazzy)
Step 1: Supplies
To complete this project, you will need:
- 8 Microfiche sheets
- A cutting mat with inch (quarter or smaller) increments and angle markers at 30, 45, and 60 degrees
- An x-acto knife (or something similar)
- Titanium non-stick scissors
- Straight-edge (preferably with a cork bottom for stability)
- double stick tape
- clear duct tape or gorilla tape
- LED lights (optional)
Step 2: Gather Your Microfiche
Collect your 8 microfiche sheets and place them on your cutting mat.
Step 3: Cut Microfiche
Cut each sheet into ~4 1/8" x 4 1/8" squares
Step 4: Score the 'fiche
Align the square to a corner of the mat and score (mark the sheet with your knife without piercing, simply cut at the surface level) the sheet at 30, 45, and 60 degree angles.
Step 5: Fold the 'fiche
Gently fold the microfiche in at the scored marks.
Step 6: Tape Into a Point
First, flip your sheet so that you are looking at the inside of it (image 1)
Next, place a small strip of double sided tape along the x-axis.
Fold the y-axis into the opposite scored angle (image 2)
Fold the x-axis over and tape into a point (image 3)
Step 7: REPEAT
Do steps 1-6 eight times to create eight points.
Step 8: Tape the Points
First grab the gorilla tape or the clear duct tape and cut a piece 1/2" wide.
Next, tape the flat points of a funnel to another flat point of a tunnel so that you are looking into the tunnel (like an empty bouquet of flowers (see image).
Repeat with 2 other funnels, make that piece of tape connecting them extend a little past the end of the points.
Step 9: Tape Into Square
Next, take the two pieces and tack them together with the tape that has a tail to create a square.
Tape all the edges together and reinforce the points of connection with extra tape.
Step 10: REPEAT
Repeat steps 8 & 9 to create another half of the star.
Next, place pieces of gorilla or clear duct tape sticky side up inside the funnel. (see image)
If you are planning to place an LED in the star, leave one of the peaks without a piece of tape (that will be your "in")
Step 11: Connect the Halves
Now, line up the two halves and press down to tape them together.
Step 12: Pop the Volume
Next, squeeze the points opposite of the flat sides and try to pop the volume back into the star.
This is the point to insert the LED, if you choose.
Otherwise, step back and admire your creation.
