Introduction: Mini Birthday Cake Gift Box

About: Hi, I'm Sarah! I love to create things - paper crafts, hand lettering, holiday crafts, fabric dyeing, polymer clay and more.

This Instructable shows how to create a small gift box that looks like a birthday cake, complete with candles!

If you'd like to watch a video showing the steps, please click the video above.

Materials:

  • Small round paper/cardboard box (I got mine at Michael's)
  • Acrylic paint
  • A drinking straw
  • Puffy paint
  • Tissue paper
  • Orange paper
  • Hot glue gun

Step 1: Add "frosting" to the Cake

First, paint the entire box with acrylic paint in your color of choice and let dry. If some of the box is still showing through, add a second coat of paint.

Take a piece of tissue paper and roll up the edge a few times, then cut this piece off. Twist it up, and hot glue the end to the top of the box, where the frosting would be. Continue twisting and glueing the piece all the way around the top of the box. Repeat this process around the bottom of the box.

Step 2: Create the Candles

Take a drinking straw and paint it with acrylic paint - you may need to do a couple of coats to get it fully covered. If the straw is a color you like, just skip this :)

Once it's dry, cut it into sections of an equal length to create the candles.

Cut tiny flame shapes out of orange paper, then hot glue them to the inside of the candles.

Step 3: Decorate the Cake

Use "frosting" (a.k.a. puffy paint :) ) to write a message onto the cake. Use a toothpick to fix the edges if you need to.

Then add any other decorations you'd like. I used puffy paint to create a dot pattern all over the cake and created a few flowers using dots.

Finally, hot glue the candles wherever you want them to be. If you'd like, add stripes to the candles with puffy paint.

Step 4: And You're Done!

That's it! Now you can fill the box with candy, a written message, a gift, etc.!

If you make this, I'd love to see it! You can tag me on instagram @essyjae :)

Thanks!
