Introduction: Mini Reusable Support Line for Plants

This project shows you how to make tiny fishing line reels to install reusable support lines for your plants. Each reel can store more than five meters!

Supplies

  • PETg for the 3d printed parts (PLA becomes fragile over time)
  • About 5 meters of fishing line for each reel
  • Some kind of hook to complement the reel

Step 1: Print the Spring Insert

First start by downloading the STL files from the link below. Then you should start by printing the spring, as it will be used as an insert in the following piece. The spring allows the reel to keep the line under tension and to release it bit by bit.

Step 2: Print the Body of the Reel

Next, you should print the body of the reel. When slicing the piece, add a color change at the height of 2,8 mm, this will make the printer stop when its time to add in the spring.

Step 3: Place the Insert Into the Main Piece

When the printer pauses for the color change, place the insert spring inside the reel body. It doesn't matter which side is up.

Once it's been placed you can resume the print.

Step 4: Thread It!

When the print ends, thread one end of the fishing line through the hole in one side of the reel. It should be pressing the top of the piece to pass smoothly. If you are having issues just try it from the inside out. Once it passes through, make a sizable knot to keep it from coming out.

Step 5: Reel It In!

Now it's the time to reel it in! Print the crank and use it to wind in the fishing line. You can also use a pen!

When you have enough line inside the reel, cut the line and tie the end to a hook of your choosing.

Step 6: Your Mini Reel Is Ready!

You can now use the mini reel to place support lines for your plants. When you no longer need it, just rewind the line and store it for another time.
