Mini Zen Garden
Intro: Mini Zen Garden
Hi! Today I will be teaching you how to make your very own desktop zen-garden! The history of Zen Gardening started in the year of 784... Yikes. These types of gardens are usually found in bigger scales and is suitable for outdoor purposes only. You will find yourself in a relaxed tone when you are creating and fixing the garden. Let us begin!
STEP 1: The Materials
You will need:
- Sand (Preferably softer sand)
- A Bamboo Box (Homegoods)
- A small fork
Optional:
- Rocks for Decor
STEP 2: Sand
Pour about 2 cups of sand in the bamboo box, about 3/5th s of the box . If the amount of sand is too small or too big, don't hesitate to put more or less!
STEP 3: Flattening/Smoothing
Once the sand has been put in the box, flatten the sand. This is a vital part of your garden, otherwise your lines will look sloppy.
STEP 4: Rippling the Sand
After the sand has been smoothed, start creating the water-like ripples in the sand. If you'd like, make some squiggly ripples to give it that "water" effect, remember this is YOUR zen-garden.

I like your idea, and the lone rock with the perfect shadow.
One note, it is easier to rake when there is less framing, myself I prefer to rake using a small wooden dowel rake (and I try to do it the same way I would a full size person so I pretty much go at a 30 degree angle dragging the rake). In order to achieve that I would more sand, so that the top is about 1/4" or get a start with a box with lower frame height.

I have always wanted a Zen Garden for my desk. I really like your approach and it does not get much simpler then add sand to taste into a bamboo box. I think that if I put one at home i would have to keep my 3 cats out of it, then again perhaps it would keep them off my keyboard.
