Modify Your Camera to Take Near-infrared Photos
Intro: Modify Your Camera to Take Near-infrared Photos
This instructable will tell you how to modify your camera to take near-infrared photos. Make sure you are willing to break your DLSR because I broke my screen in the process.
STEP 1: Tools/Materials
All you need is a camera that you don't mind accidentally ruining and a screw driver. I used a Phillips head for taking it apart and a flat head for taking out the lense.
STEP 2: Prep Your Camera
First, take out the battery and SD card. WARNING: THE CAPACITORS THAT POWER THE CAMERA'S FLASH CAN GIVE YOU A VERY DANGEROUS SHOCK EVEN WHEN THE BATTERIES ARE OUT. TAKE GREAT CAUTION TO NOT TOUCH MORE METAL PARTS THAN NECESSARY.
STEP 3: Take Your Camera Apart Part 1
Take your screwdriver and take out all the screws holding the exterior on the camera. There are many hidden ones, so be diligent. Then, take off the exterior shell. It should look like the picture.
STEP 4: Take Apart Your Camera Part 2
Unscrew the screws holding your screen in place. Then carefully take it off but keep the wires connected. I accidentally ripped the wires off so the screen no longer works. Then, locate the image capturing part. Take out the screws, and again be gentle when you take it off.
STEP 5: Take the Lens Out
You will see a blue lens under the picture capturing part. This is the lens you need out. I pried it off with a flat head screwdriver. I took a picture holding the lens up to my iPod camera.
STEP 6: Put the Camera Back Together
Put the picture capturing part on with screws, then the lens, then the exterior shell parts. There you have it! Please vote for me in the Hardware Hacking contest!
