Introduction: Moon and Star Wax Tarts

About: Hi, I'm Brooke! I'm a mom of 2 boys from WV, and I love all things arts and crafts, especially watercolors and inks!

Well what can I say,, I love candles, and wax tarts! I love anything that smells awesome and can make my house smell great really, but they can be very expensive, and a lot of what's in stores is the same old same. So in this Instructables I am going to show you how to make some sweet moon and star wax tarts, that not only smell great, but are also cute enough to use a favor for a baby shower or a house warming present!

Supplies

Wax

Essential oils

Crayons

Silicone molds, 2 cupcake and 2 star shaped

Small pot

Wooden spoon

Torch lighter

Liquid measuring cup

Stove top or burners ( for a heat source)

Step 1: Prep

First gather all of your supplies, wax is not something you can leave for a long time while your trying to find something you forgot so make sure to gather everything you need and have it close before you start. That being said let get started on our quick and cute DIY!

Step 2: Melt It

When working with wax I would suggest using a cooking pot that isn't your nicest, in case you get wax stuck to it or it might get dyed by the crayons, so keep that in mind when selecting which pot to use for this project. After selecting the right small cooking pot, place your pot on the burner on medium to medium low heat, watching for it to melt, and making sure it dosen't burn. When the wax starts to melt stir it with a wooden spoon to allow it to melt quicker. Once the clear wax has melted thoroughly, add yellow wax dye, or half of a yellow crayon to your pot, stir slowly to combine. Once all of the wax has been dyed yellow, and if your happy with the color of your finished product, carefully pour your yellow wax into your liquid measuring cup.

Step 3: Pour It In

Pour your melted wax into your liquid measuring cup so that you can have an easier time pouring the wax into your silicone molds. Fill the star molds all of the way full, and depending on how you would like to have your final products look there are different ways I have experimented in making my final product. First off you can simply fill the cupcake molds half way full, leaving space to add the blue wax on top of. On the other hand if you want your final product to have a half moon on top of it, then to achieve this look I placed a heavy shot glass into my silicone cupcake mold and then poured the wax into the mold so that it formed something that resembles a half moons.

Step 4: Clean It

Make sure to clean your liquid measuring cup, wooden spoon and your small cooking pan in between melting different colors. This can be made easier to do in two different ways. Either quickly clean items while the wax still is quite warm and can be easily removed by wiping the items with clean paper towels or after sticking the items into the freezer and when it is completely solid it can simply be chiped off in large chunks, any temperature in between is more difficult to remove, is messier and just lends its self to a lot of extra work you can easily avoid.

Step 5: That Smells Good

After your items are clean again, add on block of wax to your small cooking pot on medium low heat and stir until fully melted. Once wax is fully melted add half of any blue crayon of your choice and stir until color has been fully combined. After your happy with the blue color is how you want it, remove wax from the heat and add your essential oil( I used cinnamon oil. But you can feel free to use whatever essential oil you enjoy, lavender would work well with the theme of these wax tarts for sure)! Leave your wax on low heat so that it stays warm until your ready to use.

Step 6: Make the Milky Way

While your blue wax stays warm, now is the time to get your stars and moons out of your silicone molds, this is easily done by popping fully dried wax out of the molds, if it is difficult to remove, place in freezer for a few minutes and try again once harder and it should be able to be removed easily. When removing the half moons, take extra care when removing from around the shot glass, it might be more difficult where it's not silicone. If you accidentally Crack a moon or star while removing item, you can use a hand Torch to melt the wax back together and it is as good as new.

Step 7: Assemble Your Galaxy

Next you assemble your yellow moons and stars into the bottom of one of the cupcake molds, any way that you think they look good, but keep a few stars to add some textual interest to the top of your tarts. After you have your moons and stars where you like them, turn your burner off, and pour your blue wax into your liquid measuring cup, and then carefully pour the blue wax on top of the yellow moon and stars. Pour the remainder of your blue wax into your star molds, and allow them to fully cool and become hard.

Step 8: Love These to the Moon and Back

After your tarts are hard , remove them from the silicone molds, and pop all of the stars out of the molds as well. Add the stars to the top of your tarts using your hand touch to warm up the tarts, so that the wax pieces attach to each other, and your done. Simply put them into gift bags to give to your kids teachers for an appreciation gift, give them as favors at your baby shower, they would look just as cute pink and purple for sure, or simply keep them in a cute tray beside your tart burner, and enjoy these cuties yourself, either way, your going to love these tarts to the moon and back.
