Neato Scrap Fabric Flower Pins

I have recently taken up sewing and have TONS of scrap fabric. So I decided to make these flower pins. They're good to wear or to pin on tote bags, etc.

Step 1: Supplies

6"x6" Scrap Fabric
6"x6" Constrasting Scrap Fabric
6"x6" Interfacing (Optional)
Tissue Paper
Thread
Pin Backings
Scrap Cardboard 1" diameter circle
Decorative Beads, etc. (Optional)

Tools:
Sewing Machine
Hot Glue Gun
Iron

Step 2: Make Petal Template

I made the petals out of tissue paper - I just sketched them to my liking. They don't have to be perfect.

Step 3: Make Petals on Fabric

I traced around the tissue paper petals (after I cut them out). I also added some fusible interfacing to the fabric, at least, the large petals, to make it stiffer.

Step 4: All the Pieces Are Cut!

To give you an idea, on what I was thinking... I semi-assembled my flower.

Step 5: Zig Zag Stitch

I did a zig zag stitch around the border of each petal so that it wouldn't fray.

Step 6: Make Markings

After all the petals were cut and zig zagged, I made markings on the backs. About an inch and a half up on the big petal and about an inch on the medium petal. You don't need to do the small petals... I'll explain in the next step!

Step 7: Fold, Sew, Cut

I fold the petal in half and sew from the mark to the corner then cut off the excess fabrics. Then, when you open it up and flip it out, it's got a nice 3-D quality to it.

Step 8: The Medium and Little

I did the same thing to the medium and little flowers, except I sewed them together. That's why you didn't have to mark the fabric on the little guy.

Step 9: Begin the Gluing!

I glue the petals down to a small cardboard disc.

Step 10: Glue Pin

I glue a pin to the back of the cardboard like so...

Step 11: Ta Da!

And here are my lovely flowers (the black one doesn't look that good)! Pin them on tote bags, or if you're gutsy enough to wear them, rock it.

these look great! i wonder if there is a way to make the flowers so that they could be sewn onto clothing. they would be wonderful on the baby dresses i make! very unique and funky looking!

A great waste-not, want-not craft! Could also glue to a headband. Sew to a hair tieback. Use to decorate a gift bag or package. Put on a dowel for a lawn flower (out of sun/rain. Also could make other varieties. Very nice! Thank you for sharing.

These are incredible! I've been brainstorming ways to use old vintage fabric, but failing in comparison to this cute idea! On the black one, did you just glue the beads on?

Yup! I just put a dab of hot glue in the center and sprinkled the beads on.
